"You think I'm okay?" Steve asks. And Billy chuffs, ready to tell him he looks better than okay when Harrington lets out a nasty laugh. One that isn’t really happy and more disgusted. “I’m out here in the woods in the middle of the night and you think I’m okay?”
Billy hasn’t ever seen Steve pissed before. Even at the Byers house, he’d been some sort of noble and not actually furious . But for a moment, his face cracks into something ugly. Something Billy has seen so many times.

“Everything was covered, Hargrove.” Stevie hisses, her face red from lying face down and a little sweaty around her hairline. Her skin is probably hot to the touch all over and Billie is dying to find out just how endless her tan must be.

Steve debates just leaving, because Billy hadn’t been thrilled to see him last time. But then he’s noting Billy’s lack of a warm coat and the way he’s curled into himself on the ground as he sucks on the end of his smoke.
He looks decidedly freezing, and Steve can’t help it. He blames Dustin and Nancy and all those brats. He’s a softy.
He walks up to him before he’s figured out what exactly he’s doing.
There’s not much left in his repertoire except hey and that’s the same fucking lame thing he’d said last time. So he’s ready to say something stupid like, sup when Billy’s voice breaks the cold silence like thunder.
“I don’t do chit chat, so get lost.”
Steve really wonders, sometimes, why he even tries.

“I don’t have any folks,” Steve says, all matter of fact, like he’s telling Eddie the weather. “Because they turned me out.”
Eddie looks up at him. His head is spinning, a little dizzy from the drink, and he feels stupid for it. Not safe, when he’s gotten addicted to the way Steve licks his lip, chews on it with his teeth. “Why’s that?” he asks.
Steve turns and looks at Eddie. He’s pretty in the firelight, all golden glowing and flames reflected, dancing in his eyes. His mouth is twisted up in a bittersweet smile. He looks like a wary dog, longing for touch but too used to pain to accept any of Eddie’s gentle petting. Idly, Eddie thinks he’d pet Steve real nice if he’d let him. And, like he can read Eddie’s mind, Steve stands, crosses their campsite and sits himself down, right in Eddie’s lap.
“‘Cause of this,” he whispers, and leans down over Eddie, and catches his mouth in a kiss.
Or, Eddie doesn't much like Wayne's new hired hand that Eddie's going to be alone with all summer.

Eddie hates how much he loves being held, he hates how gentle and understanding Steve is being. He hates that he got told that someone loves him and now he’s crying and probably having a panic attack and he really needs to apologize and doesn’t deserve to be forgiven. He’s probably making Steve feel like shit right now.
Eddie would feel like shit if he confessed to someone then had to watch them work their way into a panic attack. He needs to tell Steve that it’s not his fault and that this is exactly why he shouldn’t love him but he can’t even say sorry and Steve won’t let him even try talking anymore because he’s so good and so patient and is doing his best to calm Eddie down.
