Summary
Quando uma escuridão impossível cobre a Mata Grande, os alimentos começam a apodrecer, os animais abandonam seus caminhos e as crianças adoecem de frio. Baíra, um jovem capaz de tomar emprestadas as formas e habilidades dos animais, descobre que a crise vem de muito além de sua aldeia.
Ao lado da cuidadosa Amana e do leal Raoni, ele parte em busca do Povo do Céu, que guarda acima das nuvens o Sol Faminto — uma luz antiga, poderosa e perigosa, mantida longe dos humanos desde uma devastação esquecida.
Mas cada território possui suas próprias leis, todo empréstimo exige devolução e os aliados sempre cobram alguma forma de reciprocidade. Conforme atravessa domínios de aves, ventos e seres antigos, Baíra percebe que a história da chama foi alterada e que isso esconde uma culpa ligada à queda do primeiro Urubu-Rei.

O urubu pousou no galho de uma árvore carbonizada.
— Isto não é fim — disse ele.
A árvore ainda possuía uma raiz viva sob o solo.
— Então o que é?
— Fome sem devolução.
As raízes levaram a resposta para outras árvores. As árvores contaram aos fungos. Os fungos avisaram aos insetos. Os insetos falaram com as aves pequenas, e as aves espalharam a notícia pela copa.
A Primeira Chama estava quebrando a troca do mundo.
Aquilo que comia não retornava.
Aquilo que morria não alimentava.
Aquilo que desaparecia deixava apenas ausência.

The Avengers get worried for these teens, thinking that there could be an organization worse than HYDRA turning kids into soldiers, which leads to more problems, as the world is once again in danger.
