Summary
“Wriothesley? Is something wrong in the fortress?” asks Neuvillette as he stands up from behind his desk.
“Nothing’s wrong on my part. I should be the one asking you this question,” says Wriothesley with a raised eyebrow.
Neuvillette frowns. “I fail to understand.”
Wriothesley sighs. “Why are you working on your birthday, Neuvi? A holiday,” chastises the Duke.
“Why should I not? My birthday is just a day like any other, and there is much work to be done,” argues the Iudex.
“Not when you’re only hanging by a thread. You’re exhausted, Neuvi. You need a break, more than anybody I know,” whispers Wriothesley softly.
“I assure you that I am fine, Wriothesley. There is no need to worry,” says Neuvillette quietly.

Summary
“I want more. Of you. Of this.” Wriothesley presses a palm, flat, to Neuvillette’s abdomen. Eases just that much deeper into Neuvillette’s body. They both sigh into each other’s mouths, a shared breath. “My mate.”
“You’ve told me of this before,” Neuvillette says, gasping against Wriothesley’s neck. He doesn’t bite, no, but he tangles fingers, nails long and pale white, into salt and pepper hair, and tugs Wriothesley closer. Digs his heels harder into Wriothesley’s back and cants hips up to meet the roll of those hips.
“Of wanting a family?” Wriothesley is just as starved for breath, and a flush creeps down his neck to his chest. He grips Neuvillette’s hip, while the other teases at the soft skin below Neuvillette’s navel. “A pup?”
- While Neuvillette's nature as a Vampyr and Wriothesley's as a Were keep them from having a family, a fateful hunt in the forest leads Wriothesley to rescuing a child from Death's grasp. Perhaps Fate has listened to their desires after all, and answered in Her own strange ways.

“I could smell his disgusting pheromones from outside your office. That bastard won’t be trying this again, I promise you,” says Wriothesley as he turns his attention back on Neuvillette.
“Hopefully it will serve as a deterrent for other alphas wanting to try their luck,” replies Neuvillette.
“There’s been that many?”
“I’m afraid so. Lady Furina is urging me to find a mate to put an end to these attempts,” reveals the Iudex, a hint of frustration in his voice.
“...Are you considering it?” asks Wriothesley after a beat of silence, finding Neuvillette’s gaze.
“I have no desire to bond myself to someone I hold no love towards. But our Archon is becoming more and more insistent on the matter.”
