Summary
Hua Cheng lowers his hand, and both Feng Xin and Mu Qing crash to the floor. Feng Xin winds up with rugburn on his cheekbone and a dislocated shoulder, getting the better end of the deal than Mu Qing, whose nose is gushing blood between his fingers. Payback for earlier, at least—but his satisfaction is short-lived when Xie Lian hiccups a sob on the divan and then breaks into a string of rapid cries so panicked they sound painful. He slaps at the cushions of the divan, terror escalating, eyes wide open.
“Help, help, help, help,” he gasps between cries. “Help me. Help me. Please. Please!”
When a tongueless spirit appears in the south and curses ghosts, gods, and mortals alike with catatonia, Hua Cheng, Mu Qing, and Feng Xin must work together to solve the mystery behind the curse and save Xie Lian from the horrors ravaging his mind.
They may never find a cure, however, if the villagers plagued by the spirit don’t stop lying to them at every turn.

Hua Cheng knelt at the end of the table to look underneath, and felt all the air in his chest whoosh out in shock.
It was unmistakably Xie Lian, sitting crouched and hugging his knees to his chest at the far end of the table, but… younger. Much younger. Those big golden brown eyes blinked at him in fear. He bit his bottom lip as a tear rolled down his cheek, tiny body scrunching tighter around himself and his overly large robes. Hua Cheng figured he couldn’t be older than five or six.

When an unknown curse hits Xie Lian and turns him into a child, Hua Cheng is happy to take care of him until they figure out what happened and how to reverse it.

The two of them find their footing and rekindle their high school friendship like no time has passed, but they’re both scared of what it means and use their circumstances to hide behind their feelings.

Above all else right now, he just so wishes they had time – time for him to hook his arms under the crook of her knees and back and take the weight of her up off her feet so that she could focus on the weight in her chest, time for them both to cry for longer than a measly few minutes (what a joke, he can’t help but scoff), time to clutch his chest in gratefulness and grief and gold.
But they don’t have that right now.
Instead, the two of them sit in silence, Hunter watching (although he’s not really watching anymore, even when Gus and that boy start tussling in the grass, not when there’s green, green, green filling up the corner of his eye), Willow pressing her back up against the rough, hewn bark of the fir behind them so that she can stare upwards between the prickly red fronds. The sprindles are sharp and sweet-smelling, swollen with sap as they are, and the scent breathes into them even this far below. It’s a smell Hunter’s come to associate with the isles. What a comfort it is, to sit with it again. The fragrant pines of the human realm were nice, but not enough.

For a moment, they lay still. Willow slowly brought her hand up to his chest, where she could feel his heart thrumming under her fist, just like she did at the lake when he finally woke up. She uncurled her fingers and let his pulse click against her open palm, a steady reminder of what she needed most to hear.
In their first night back in the Boiling Isles, Willow can't sleep. Neither can Hunter. (There is a lot of talking and crying.)

Willow exhaled, resting her temple against the glass and closed her eyes. Hunter didn’t believe for a second that she would fall asleep, as her body remained coiled with tension.
“He just...” She whispered. “...wanted to see this world so much.”
Hunter could see it in that smile, in those weary eyes, hear it in her heavy voice.
Willow was absorbing Gus’s burdens to lighten his load. It was quite possible she was doing the same with everyone who surrounded her.
This left her own burdens neglected.
He understood how it felt to devote your entire self to the monsters that plagued the life of someone else. It withered away every fragment of yourself that belonged solely to you.
“Like you wanted to see the rain.” Hunter reminded her.
It must be a little bittersweet for Willow too.
(The kids' first night in Camila Noceda's home. A late night conversation between Hunter and Willow, a pair of insomniacs who aren't very good at talking about how all of this is affecting them.)

The twist in his stomach had been replaced with something fizzy that made his heart pound a little faster. Yuuri took a deep breath. “Okay,” he said, then repeated it more loudly when it came out barely audible. “Okay, Victor.”
