    A month after the tribunal, Kim is finally released from the hospital. And learns that Harry has been left in Martinaise, his fate unknown. He resolves to investigate, for this is what RCM officers do, don't they?
    "The lieutenant, presumably, would have looked in every corner for a quiet place to die. Somewhere to watch the sun disappear, to keep warm for the night and then shoot himself in the morning as a ‘thank you’ note to the space that had welcomed and sheltered him. The hypothesis was reasonable, correlating with his observations. He had hoped solving the case would prevent any such eventuality. He had thought he would be there to see to it. There was an absurdity at the center of this, a police car driving away as a successful detective watched it cross the bridge and disappear. He couldn’t make sense of it. That was probably where the numbness came from, more Drouamine than an addict would care for, and the Du Bois special: that urge to say something absurdly communist and then shoot a child in the chest. The RCM was not a child, though. And he wasn’t a communist."
