“Why are you calling me, Hollander?” Ilya asks more harshly than he means to. But he’s tired, and impatient, and strung out on a mixture of emotions and longing for the voice on the other end of the phone. “If nothing is wrong, why are you calling?”
“Will you come?” Shane asks, and Ilya’s heart sinks before he can even say the rest of it. He shouldn’t have asked. He should have just let Shane ramble. “To…to the wedding?”
The lump in his throat feels insurmountable. But he manages to say, “I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
Shane doesn’t acknowledge it. “I invited alllll these people, but the only one I actually care if they come or not is you.” He stops and giggles. “Isn’t that weird?”
“Yes,” Ilya replies, because it is. You shouldn’t want your years-long situationship at your wedding. He doesn’t want the drunken musings of Shane Hollander to give him hope.

Or Shane gets engaged. Ilya gets a phone call. Everything breaks. But sometimes breaking is what finally makes room for the truth.

“No. No, Hollander,” Ilya coughed, eyes flitting around the room. “Is just– Is too much.”
“This is… too much?” Shane repeated slowly, incredulously. “We see each other maybe once a month. Less, even.”
“No. Is not that– You are just,” Ilya swore under his breath in Russian. His accent was getting thicker, the words clunkier, in the way it always got stronger when he was frustrated or tired. Shane hated himself for recognizing it. “...too much.”
OR
In the Heated Rivalry book, Ilya intends to break things off with Shane the night of the All-Star Game, but then Shane gets hurt. What if Shane never gets injured by Marlow, and Ilya really does break things off?
(Basically, a shit ton of angst and Shane Hollander learning to love himself. There will be a happy ending!)

Summary
Heartbreak and hockey don't mix.
Boston's Ilya Rozanov decides to do what he'd been putting off for years. He calls off his affair with Shane Hollander, Montreal extraordinaire, right before a Montreal vs Boston game. He gets a hockey puck shot right into his hamstring for it. Right in the middle of the game. Honestly, he never guessed Hollander had it in him to be vindictive.
As for Shane...it works. He didn’t want to see Rozanov anymore. In this game. In this season. And now Ilya’s out. Ball and chained to healing and recovery, pain meds and physical therapy for the next year. Maybe when Rozanov comes back, Shane will be able to stomach breathing the same air as him again.
And Rozanov will be back. That much is guaranteed. Shane just fails to measure how back Ilya Rozanov will be. If he thought Rozanov was a nightmare on the ice before his injury, he’s got a reckoning coming.

Summary
No matter how many times they meet and his eyes flicker with dim recognition, whether it’s at the dive bar on Beacon Street or the French cafe near TD Garden, she wonders which will happen first: Ilya Rozanov realizing she’s twins with the guy he’s been hooking up with since his rookie season, or that he’s in love with said guy.
Of course, she also feels the same curiosity every time Shane tells her he has to end it, only to fall right back into Rozanov’s lap.
Boys are so dumb, honestly. It’s a shame she’s quite fond of them both.
