Summary
Down on his luck wouldn’t even begin to describe Levi’s current situation. After emigrating from Germany with his remaining family, his mother thought she had finally escaped human trafficking. Technically, she had. But, with no options as an immigrant with no papers, she was almost forced back into sex work. Most of Levi’s earliest memories were of his mother, sick and frail, with all the life drained out of her eyes. Or hearing muffled grunts as he hid in the closet of their studio apartment.
Levi’s only frame of reference for sex work was exploitation and dehumanisation. Which is what it was really, but isn’t any other form of work? He sold his body to the state when he was part of the military, this truly shouldn’t be any different.

Veteran!Levi is out-of-work and, with no high school diploma and a questionable record, it seems it won't happen any time soon. Thankfully, Hange has just the idea to help him out.

Tommy's feet drag in the snow.
It's so, so cold. He's so cold. His toes are freezing. His exposed shins feel like they’ve been cut open-- even the one that’s bandaged. His wings have gone numb, which is almost, almost good, because now he can’t feel the shifting, broken bones inside of the left one, just under feathers and muscle.
He doesn’t know why he’s still walking.
