Summary
"Buck? You okay?"
"Fine."
Buck's voice is choked. He sounds like he's in pain. Eddie flicks the light on. Buck's face is covered in sweat. He's biting down on his wrist, trying to stifle any sounds of pain. Eddie runs over and kneels next to him, eyes scanning him for any injuries. Did he miss something earlier? He had checked Buck over and hadn't seen anything. Fear roars through his veins, drowning out everything else.

Summary
Buck stands on the edge of the pier. The cold fingers of the wind curl around his arms, as if beckoning him closer. It's sickly ironic that he's choosing to do it here. To end his life in the place where he fought so hard to keep it. But maybe there's some poetic justice in that. He was always meant to die. He's simply finishing the task the world has repeatedly failed. So many times he's almost been killed, and yet for some reason he survived. Why him? Why was he deserving of life when others weren't? He has nothing to give. He's worthless. Broken. All he does is hurt the people around him. He wants so badly to die. So why can't he just fucking jump?

Summary
Every muscle in Eddie locked up the second he was out of the truck and rounding the corner they were being led towards, gaze drawn immediately to the ladder truck standing in the middle of the recreated street, its ladder fully extended, and– and there was Buck again, hanging from the end by nothing but the harness Eddie had pulled tight on him before telling him “Alright, cowboy, go get em,” words that had almost been the last thing he ever said to him. There was Buck, limp and strung up like a marionette puppet. There was Buck, water pooling on his turnout coat and falling to the ground below in splashes like some morbid, gruesome version of the cones at waterparks. There was Buck and he wasn’t breathing, his heart wasn’t beating, he was gone. Again. Rain seemed to sting his skin, cutting his face, his hands, his arms, his neck like small needles falling from the sky, and there was a scream, a desperate call of a name pushing at the back of his tongue, begging to escape, and–

Summary
“Maddie?” It was silent over the line for a long moment—too long—and Eddie shifted forwards, throat tight. What was going on? Why– “Maddie?”
A sob cut through the silence, a choked, broken sound, and Eddie could feel the way his breath got trapped in his chest. He’d been at Maddie’s side when Buck was struck by lightning, when she found him after the tsunami, when she barreled into his hospital room after the ladder truck crushed his leg, when they found Chim on their wedding day, and– and he’d never heard her sound like that. “Maddie, what–”
“They got Buck. Buck’s gone. They took him, they took Evan.”
The world stopped. And it didn’t keep turning. Because– Buck.
“What?” His voice sounded faint to his own ears, cracked, broken, shattered, and Chris jerked to look at him again, dropping the blankets clenched in his fists and turning to face him as his feet slid off the couch to the floor. Fear shone in his eyes, and– and Eddie’d forgotten how well he could read his reactions now.

Summary
Everything was fine. The sun shined just as bright as the day before. The birds still flew. The leaves still fell. Kids still played on the playground. Everything was fine.
Until it wasn't.
It's always the days that go off track. A slight change of plans. That's when the earth decides to go off course. That's when the higher power takes control. Buck had taken the day off. He wasn't supposed to. He was supposed to be at the firehouse. With Eddie. Cap. Chimney. Hen. Ravi. He was supposed to be safe. But at the end of the day. Everyone's lives are handled in the hands of the universe. They're just puppets, dangling from strings. Before whoever is up there decides they're done, and let's go. Call it for the dramatics. Realism. Or just boredom. But eventually all good things come to an end. Eventually you will die. And everyone around you will die. And it won't matter how you live your life, cause no one will even remember who you are.
