She almost has it. Just past Mari and then onto her feet and Coach will never be able to catch her.
Mari grabs Shauna’s injured wrist and twists. Pain explodes across Shauna’s arm and a yelp scrapes itself from her throat as she falls on top of Mari.
By the time the pain fades enough for Shauna to remember to move, there’s a noose around her neck, pulled taut. Mari lies underneath her with wide-eyes and shallow cuts sliced across her cheeks. Her clothes are caked with dirt and ragged and her hand rests overtop of the bone of Shauna’s wrist, like she’s preparing herself to twist again.
“Holy shit Shauna,” she says, out of breath, “What the fuck is wrong with you?”
The pit makes a bad day worse for Shauna. Or maybe that’s just Mari. (canon compliant up until the end of 3x2)

She’s so surprised that she laughs, thinking it’s a joke.
Then she sees Joel’s smile, confident that he’s hitting a good point for teasing.
“Waylon’s-” She starts before she stops. Waylon’s gay, is what she was going to say, but that’s not her secret to tell. Waylon and Zack aren’t private about it when it’s just them and Dina and Jesse, and she knows their families know, but she hasn’t missed how they don’t usually get too touchy around other people.
For the first time, she consciously thinks about why that might be.
The so am I she could finish the thought with suddenly seems like a very bad idea.

Charles Xavier is headmaster to a prestigious school for mutants. Erik Lehnsherr is a mutant terrorist. They play chess on the weekends when they're not trying to actively destroy each other's legacies (or kill the president, or go to space, or recruit various mutants into their cool kid clubs). It's unlikely, and it works, even if neither of them would ever let it slip that they have been seen with the other. Or, even if they leave a lot of things unsaid. Or kind of don't say anything at all, mostly.
It works out. It's a good place to be in, better than before. Right?
Why do they want to hang out, again?
And anyway, what is so wrong with getting tipsy and playing chess with your ex-situationship turned "We Were Literally on the News Together for Terrorism Related Incidents" arch-nemesis? A lot. There's a lot wrong with it, actually.
Charles and Erik drink, play chess, talk about their feelings (oof), and mostly, honestly, argue. There's a lot of arguing.

Can't he tell that he is terrifying - a splintering lie of a person, a flat, unending pit in the fabric of reality, no more his Erik than a crude sketch, a second-hand description, a golem from the stories of Erik's childhood that he'd whispered to Charles at night sometimes, little pieces of his history shaped into gifts.
or: Charles experiences Shaw's death, a narrowly-averted war, and the disorienting powers of the helmet in rapid succession, and then gets shot. He deserves a little panic attack, as a treat.
