Raising an eyebrow, Spike flicks on the flame and lights up the cigarette. The girl gasps in outrage, and comes out from behind the wall, standing at the top of the stairs. She’s a little thing, probably about ten, all gangly limbs and furious glaring.
‘My sister will kick your butt!’
‘Isn’t it past your bedtime, kid?’

Tara takes a seat beside her, taking a sip of her tea. “Yeah. They’re special, no doubt. Chosen. But… I don’t think they’ll ever really understand.”

“What it’s like for everyone else.” Tara says softly.

‘Just watching a movie. Girl talk. You know.’ Marinette says, as casually as she can while she’s basically draped around Chloé.
‘And talking about how Chloé’s not going to the dance next week to avoid her snake of an ex-girlfriend.’ Alya says candidly, and Marinette and Chloé turn exasperated looks at their friend. Alya holds up her hands. ‘What? It’s not a secret. Besides, you agree with me and Mari, right Mrs Dupain-Cheng? We think Chloé should still go.'

The door opened, but when Marinette looked up she was once again stumped at the sight of Chloé standing in the bakery doorway. The only thing stranger than Chloé showing up at the bakery out of the blue was her… doing it again. Spending time with Marinette, in her parents bakery, apparently of her own free will.
There was an awkward moment when neither of them said anything – Chloé’s arms crossed defensively across her chest, Marinette in shock at seeing the other girl again. There was that look on her face again, the vulnerability Marinette hadn’t seen before or since that night a few weeks ago. She still didn’t know what to make of it.
