‘Oh, Lottie. What are you doing?’ Laura Lee asked. There was a glow coming from her. It was soft and lit up the space around her, but if Lottie looked too close, she could see flames and charred skin.
‘I’m trying to find him.’ Lottie said.
Laura Lee looked sad, and knelt down beside Lottie. In the silence around them, there was a very faint baby cry from somewhere far away.

‘You can’t smoke in here!’ The girl whispers angrily.
Raising an eyebrow, Spike flicks on the flame and lights up the cigarette. The girl gasps in outrage, and comes out from behind the wall, standing at the top of the stairs. She’s a little thing, probably about ten, all gangly limbs and furious glaring.
‘My sister will kick your butt!’
‘Isn’t it past your bedtime, kid?’

Van lets herself say, “I miss you.” On the other end of the line Tai is silent for a minute too long. Van wants to curl up and die.
But then Tai says, “Come see me next weekend.” And even though next weekend is days away, Van feels the irrational urge to lock up the shop right now and run for the bus to the train station.Van goes down to DC to visit Tai at school for a weekend. Turns out they're not done losing things to the wilderness.
