She remembered it so clearly—a roaring warrior fighting his way desperately across the ice, axes glinting in the sunlight as he felled every orc in his path. The beat of the drums that rattled her bones. How she dangled in the open air, freezing wind tearing at her clothes and stinging her skin. How she choked for breath, clawing at the hand wrapped around her neck, even as her vision grew spotty. The complete terror, knowing there was no one close enough to save her. The horrible voice of the Defiler crying out in gloating triumph. The way everyone who fought below seemed to freeze at the sound—everyone save for a single dwarf. The burst of pain as the blade pierced through her back and out the middle of her chest. And the anguished scream that rose above everything else as she fell.
It was the last thing she heard.
She hadn’t yet dared to wonder why her death had ripped such a terrible sound from someone such as he, who was no stranger to loss.
