Summary
Being a light sleeper was one of the downsides of being an ex-Roman slave. Growing up, Catlin had learnt that the best way to protect herself was to wake up at the smallest of movements, so she could always be aware of what was coming. It had served her well when she was in chains in a Roman cell. And it served her well now too, living in the camp with Roman’s constantly on their tail. It was a gift, waking up to the faintest sound of hoof beats on the horizon or the clanging of swords, it had saved their lives a few times. But, waking up at the smallest sounds also meant waking up to the sound of Conor's shouts in the middle of the night, his desperate pleas for them not to hurt her. He’d never said what her name was, but she guessed it was Claire, the great love of his life.

Norma’s head shot up when she heard Lottie’s loud scream of pain. “Lo!” She exclaimed, shoving her knitting off her lap and racing through the playground to try and find her daughter. She bent down to pick up the ribbon and was about to call out for her daughter again when she heard Lottie’s voice carrying over the soundtrack of a children’s playground.
“Screw off!” Lottie yelled, sounding so much like her mother that Norma was almost proud. She scowled, her arms crossed over her chest in a display that was purely inherited from her father. “You pushed me!”

He was always so warm, she loved it. “The motel is doing really well for the first time in years and almost every room has got a family and kids in it. I wanted to do an egg hunt for Lottie and the other kids.” She said, rattling the bag. She’d bought a bunch of hollow plastic eggs and put chocolate ones inside them. There was enough for everyone to have a few.

She felt Alex stiffen under her cheek at her words and glanced up at her husband.
“It is?” He asked, brows furrowed in confusion.
She swallowed hard and nodded. “Yeah. I just… We’re married, I thought you should know. For like, forms and insurance and stuff. We don’t- You don’t have to celebrate it.”
