Keith’s room is a box made of windows. Clear walls on all sides, so he can be observed from any angle. He imagines it’s a little like living in a zoo, except in zoos, the animals usually have a place to go if they don’t feel like being seen.
He has a bed though. Or a bunk, rather, attached to one wall. And blankets. He normally sleeps underneath it these days, in a blanket cocoon. They haven’t punished him for it yet.

“Keith, you’re not going to meet anyone if you don’t even make it past the check-in table,” Pidge told him bluntly.
Keith felt the tips of his ears turn warm and pink. “Who says I’m here to meet someone, anyway?”
“Because you’re at a singles munch.” Pidge gave him a flat look. “And you’ve been single for the ten years we’ve known each other. You’re one of my best friends, and you deserve to find a guy who will tie you up and fuck you good.”
“Pidge!” Keith hissed sharply.
“Um,” a voice next to them said. The two of them looked over to the man who had just walked through the door, and Keith wished a lightning bolt would magically zap him right out of existence, because the man was easily the hottest guy Keith had ever laid eyes on, and he had overheard Pidge saying that.
The man smiled awkwardly, making the faded scar over the bridge of his nose crinkle slightly, but there was a hint of laughter in his warm gray eyes. “I can come back later?”

Summary
Keith knows that having Shiro plea with the officers on his behalf is a distinctly unpleasant experience. The entire thing, in fact, is unpleasant, from the fight with what’s-his-face, to getting dragged in and threatened with expulsion.
Not that Keith isn’t grateful. He’s very grateful. Sitting outside the office now and hearing them go back and forth, Keith can tell the tide is turning, and that Shiro himself is making that happen. Shiro not only got him into the Garrison, but is now going to save his ass.

“You got a haircut.”
Keith freezes, one arm halfway out of his coat sleeve. It’s the brown one with the plaid lining, the one that doesn’t match anything else he owns, but is too practical to get rid of. He pulls it off his other arm and holds it tight to his chest. Shakes his head.
“Not recently?”
Shiro frowns.
Keith dips forward and doesn’t shiver when curious fingers tangle in the hair at the back of his neck. Shiro’s palm feels large on the back of his skull as his fingers fist, gentle, into Keith’s hair, and then relax. He pulls them free, expression thoughtful. Keith watches through his bangs as he straightens up.
“Been like that for awhile,” he smiles, apologetic.
Shiro smiles back, tightness between his brows crumbling to an open kind of trust. “Huh. I must’ve… gotten mixed up.”
