The Eridian thrills a high sound that doesn’t get picked up by the translator which means that it has no clear meaning. Like when a human gasps or sucks in a deep breath. It actually sounds a little like that. When they notice that I’m staring straight at them they scramble back into their hiding spot and hold very still.
A child, I realize with a start.
That’s a child!
“Hey,” I call and the kid squeaks again. I was about to get to my feet but abort the movement and crawl closer on my hands and knees until I'm inches away from the xenonite wall. I wait and it takes me much too long to realize that they don’t have to peek around the corner to see if I’m still there.
“Hey there,” I try again, my voice low and calm. It’s my teacher voice, the one I use for shy and scared students.
Used.
The fact that I haven’t had to use it for years and it still comes to me automatically almost knocks the air out of my lungs but this is not about me, it’s about making sure the little pebble doesn’t die of fright from the scary alien. “Hi, I’m Grace. It’s alright, you don’t have to be scared.”

“Would like to do it. But cannot touch. Rocky not know how to jerk off, either. Grace show first, so Rocky can learn. Maybe do later.”
Three of Rocky’s claws raise and they open and close as they sway this way and that, all pointed at Grace. The only thing keeping them apart is a thin layer of xenonite and the incompatible atmospheres. Air and a few atoms. Somehow, the idea that Rocky might have just shoved Grace over and started touching him because he wanted to had him embarrassingly hard. He would be strong enough to. Grace wouldn’t even be able to fight him off…
“Grace thinking about something exciting. Statement. Share.”
Taptaptap, a claw on the glass. Excited.
“Body is changing. Erection. Observation.”
“Okay, you looking through my clothes is cheating,” Grace wheezes.

Summary
It’s quiet, especially so with the sound being muffled by his hands over his mouth, but I can still make out the next words when he speaks:
“I really shouldn’t ask you to do this.”
“Do what, question?”
Grace’s initial response is only to press his hands stronger against his face. But then, he loosens them to fall over his chest, one landing over the scar on his arm.
The scar I left on him.

Grace has come to realize a few things about the reality of his soon-to-be home on Erid. Making himself comfortable means asking a sacrifice of Rocky, one he’s not happy about…
On the other hand, Rocky is always looking for ways to repay the sacrifice Grace has made for him.
