Lucy lazily stared as the morning rays highlighted the small particles of dust that floated around their bedroom, following the swirl of specks to the floor where Kojo softly snored.
She'd experienced happiness before. Pleasure, joy, excitement. All emotions she'd hopefully continue to enjoy throughout a long life. But this? This exact moment that was turning out to be a normal part of her daily routine? She had trouble describing it.
She loved and was loved.
She felt tranquil and fulfilled by just being.
She felt protected yet powerful.
She was wonderfully content.

There were a lot of things she had expected when she made the choice to show up at her training officer’s house without any notice.
She had expected him to be annoyed by her sudden presence. She had expected him to call her boot in that gruff tone of his. She had expected him to look tired but still pretend he wasn’t. She had expected him to be an asshole and act like he was the one doing her a favour by accepting her delicious soup and cookies, and not the other way around.
She had not, in any way, expected him to open the door looking like this. She had not prepared for this.
