Everything had been going fine, until the conversation shifted dangerously towards the past, and specifically, Eroch.
“Traitor.” Diluc snarled. “Disturbing everyone and just committing suicide without any accountability for his actions.” He took a heavy breath, taking a rough sip of his drink. “What a coward.”
Under the table, Kaeya’s hand unconsciously grabbed his scarred wrist.

Or, to summarize, after hearing Diluc's opinion on Eroch's suicide, Kaeya can't help but be ashamed of himself, afraid of what Diluc would think of him if he knew the truth.

Diluc is woken up one night by a giant snow leopard yelling outside his window, miles away from Dragonspine…
Kaeya gets cursed by an Abyss Herald while on patrol in the Dragonspine area, and has to go to the one person who understands him best to make sure he can have somewhere safe to stay and someone to help him break the spell. To his chagrin, that one person happens to be his estranged brother.

Summary
Alcohol is Kaeya's medicine. When he's feel down, alcohol washes that feeling away. Any negative thought Kaeya has usually is fixed by a having a couple of drinks.
Usually.
But for some reason his thoughts are being particularly loud tonight. That's fine because Kaeya can just up the dosage. No one will be here to judge him. Kaeya is completely alone. He knows that for sure.

Death had spoken its final decision, and what was left behind was an emptiness that was never going to fill. An office that was going to get assigned to someone else. A company that was going to be trusted to another. A country that was going to move on as if nothing had happened. And a brother who couldn’t even thank the other for a signature.
If he had known this was going to happen, would he have run to the Headquarters to join that useless meeting? If he had known this was going to happen, what would he have said? If he had known this was going to happen, would he have let that contract and that merchant even linger in his mind?
Or: Upon Kaeya's sudden death, Diluc realized that what he interpreted as hatred was passion all along, and now that he mourns his death, he is getting washed with guilt, shame, and agony. Also, this is my own farewell to someone I lost.
