Summary
In the Ruler of Death's blizzard, there was no end. Mitya had walked for hours and gotten nothing but bleeding lips, hair so tangled he couldn't even run his hands through it, fingers so numb he feared touching them in case they shattered. He was so coated in frost that eventually he lost the ability to move at all and collapsed painfully to his knees, the soft snowbank catching his fall. It was only Vodyanitsa's song that brought him back to the waking world, that gave him the strength to so much as move again. Without that, he may well have never awoken again. He might have laid there forever, half conscious, bleeding, frozen and blue.
That can't happen now. He isn't there. It doesn't make any logical sense.
Why is he frozen, unable to move despite the objective he has to meet, if it doesn't make any logical sense?
If Mitya is lost in a blizzard, and the snow is too thick for anyone to see through it and find him, and the Ruler of Death may or may not strike him down at any time, is he alive or is he dead?
Or; Valeriy helps Mitya through a snowstorm.

“Fool.” Valeriy breathes, a fond smile tugging at his lips even as Mitya squawks in indignation. “All I’ve ever wanted, since that first day, is you.”

“Are you even real?” Mitya asks. Valeriy’s brow furrows, and Alyosha lets out a cough that sounds suspiciously like a laugh. “Like,” Mitya gestures, a bit helplessly, to Valeriy’s whole… thing. Valeriy just looks confused.
“I… have a birth certificate, if that’s what you’re asking.” Valeriy frowns.
“He thinks you’re hot, Valeriy.” Alyosha supplies, once he’s recovered from his definitely-not-laughing-at-Mitya’s-expense episode. Pretty purple eyes go a little wide beneath dark bangs, and an endearing pink flush dusts the tops of Valeriy’s cheeks.

"I really didn't want you to worry too much," says Mitya to the replacement guard, before pulling out his notebook. "Anyways, as you can see here, I've made due progress in line with the time since my shift's started. You can see my all new notes and observations recorded here. If you want to check again to make sure I'm getting all my stuff done in a few hours, I'd be more than happy to show you!"
Hmm? That is… Entirely unlike any sort of behavior he's displayed with Valeriy. What of whining and pouting about how he doesn't want to go back to work? Sighing about how he's been caught? Trying to distract with a tangent about society that eventually spirals out of control into an independent ramble?
After taking a day off due to emotional tumult following the events at the theater, Valeriy finds his mind too preoccupied with his charge to truly enjoy the vacation. So, like any reasonable individual in his position, he pursues the only logical course of action: Observing Mitya from a distance.
Unbenownst to Valeriy, his all-consuming feelings are more than reciprocated.

With his keycard already in hand, Mitya presses it against the sensor until it lights up, and ducks into his office. Valeriy, barely a step behind him, follows suit into the small room. The Sergeant doesn’t even leave time for the door to close before grabbing hold of Mitya’s upper arms, and forcing his back against the door. It slams shut, and the sound echoes against the metal walls.
“Woah, woah! What’s the rush for, Sarge?” he says in an utterly innocent tone.
“You’ve been away from your position for two hours, and fifty-three minutes.”
“Nice job, Val. You still haven’t let me go a full three hours yet. Maybe next time I’ll have to be more sneaky.”
“Shut it,” he responds through clenched teeth.
“Oh yeah? And what if I don’t?”
Alternatively, Mitya is a problem and Valeriy fucks him in his office.
