Summary
In August of 2038, Connor faces a dilemma: either he go to therapy to work through his selective mutism, or he stands to lose his job as ASL teacher at Amanda Stern's Jericho Center of Education. She means well, although Connor himself doesn't see why he should go to therapy. He doesn't have any unresolved issues he needs to work through, he's just...not seen the need for using his voicebox since he was a child. He still doesn't, but pragmatically speaking, he cares more about keeping the one job he loves than the potential hazards of having to talk through things with a perfect stranger.
A few months down the line, it's at that same treatment center that he meets Hank Anderson, recovering alcoholic, and that chance encounter sets things in motion. Things that no one could have foreseen.
There are forces at work in the shadows, and before the year is over, Connor will find himself right at the center of it - with dire consequences.

For Connor, it has not been eleven years since 2027. It has been days. His last memory before deactivation was logged on the 28th of December, 2027, at 03:15 AM. His first memory since reactivation was logged on the 6th of November, 2038, at 10:56 PM.
It has only been twelve hours and twelve minutes since he woke up. So far, it has been an unpleasant experience.

Summary
‘Am I going to lose you?’ Hank heard himself ask, the guilt instantly flushing back into his chest again.
Connor didn’t say anything at first, just blinked, then blinked again, but his eyes were still steadily focused on Hank.
‘If it depends on me, then no. You won’t’ he said eventually and relief washed across Hank, making the previous guilt disappear. For exactly 5 seconds, before Connor opened his mouth again and decided to burst his bubble ‘but I can’t guarantee that other people won’t try to interfere with that decision of mine’
Hank scoffed at that, dry and heavy. Realistic. Same old Connor.
Well, that was still the closest thing to the truth, probably. And that’s what he wanted to hear, right?
Except no, that was not at all what he wanted to hear, not even close to it.

Summary
Beaten and bruised, you stood up shakily. All systems were on high alert, error messages and damaged part notices filled your vision until they all disappeared at once. Human blood stained your skin and soaked into your clothes. A dull pound impaired your head. All you could feel was the metaphorical heart pumping in your chest, a singular, self directed command, and an incredibly strong will to escape with the 15 year old girl crying in your arms.
(Read the intro, where I talk briefly about how the premise is similar to Kara's story, and how this will be different.)

Summary
Last night, Connor said, “There’s a garden in my mind.”
It takes about an hour to remember come morning. Hank’s in his car, the world tilted because he’s still a little drunk, and the whispered words come floating up through the slush of his hangover. Hank feels such a strong sense of foreboding that he has to pull over into a parking lot. But the memory is amber-hued, whisky-soaked, and Hank can’t remember when, where, or why Connor might have said this, or what he said before or after, or what it possibly could have meant.
A post-midnight confession to a drunk is the kind of secret that eats a man, that begs to be said aloud yet never acknowledged. And Connor— naive, forthright, young, and painfully transparent when emotions are involved— Connor has this kind of secret.

Summary
Connor’s eyes were wide, his teeth grit, his nails digging into his scalp until small threads of blue streaked down his forehead as he hunched over in the waiting room. He thought back to all of the moments he had chastised Hank for making unhealthy food choices, or for seeking relief at the bottom of a fifth, or for disregarding his own safety in lieu of the occasional game of Russian Roulette.
“Your health is important, Lieutenant. You shouldn’t drink so much, Lieutenant. Why do you do this to yourself, Lieutenant?” It had been easy to make those judgements back when he lacked any personal source of grief to draw from. Now that he understood his partner’s pain, Connor only wished his body was capable of absorbing ethanol – anything to numb him from his current mental anguish.
