Summary

But she was still falling. Still choking on the nightmare. Tears rushed hot and unstoppable down her face. Her lungs refused to work. Her vision blurred. She clawed at the person holding her, desperate, needing them, needing—
"Luke?" she gasped.
Everything went still.
The arms around her froze. The chest against her back stopped moving. She felt the person's breath catch in a wounded, stunned inhale.
Annabeth blinked hard through the tears.
The shape in front of her came into focus.
Percy.
Not Luke.
Percy — his face pale, his sea-green eyes wide and stricken and heartbreakingly gentle.
She realized what she had said.
She realized what she had done.
"Percy," she choked out, horrified. "No— I'm— I didn't — I wasn't—"
His hurt wasn't anger, wasn't jealousy — it was worry. Devastated worry. He cupped her face with both hands like she was something fragile. "Hey, hey, it's okay. Annabeth, it's okay. You were dreaming. You're safe. I'm here."
But she was already crumbling, falling forward into his chest. Her body shook with sobs that she couldn't control, couldn't hold back anymore. Percy wrapped his arms around her instantly, fiercely, holding her like he was trying to keep every piece of her together with his bare hands.
"It's okay," he whispered. "You're home. You're safe. I've got you."
She didn't feel safe.
She felt hollow.
Broken.
She pressed her forehead into his collarbone, her voice muffled and cracked. "I don't— I don't wanna be here anymore."
Percy's entire body went rigid — just for a heartbeat — before he crushed her to him, his voice breaking as he murmured into her hair.

“I don’t understand.”Morgan was startled. He hadn't expected her to talk. “What do you mean?”
“Why didn't she fight back? She had the advantage, he was distracted.” Reid lowered his book, reading forgotten as he listened to his fellow agents.
Morgan shook his head and crossed his arms. “She was too young to fully understand what was happening. Did you expect her to fight back?”
Annabeth huffed. “Yes! She had a clear advantage. One hard hit to his knees and he would have dropped his arm and she could have run away.” She was getting worked up, the tapping getting faster and faster. Annabeth pulled harshly on her necklace, rubbing her calloused fingers over the wooden beads in a desperate attempt to soothe herself.
