“See, sir?” A child (and those were not allowed this close to the arena) weaseled his way in between Grian’s arm and his torso. “Told you I was with my dad.”
Grian simply stared at the child, the Mod the kid was evidently running from looking between them dubiously.
The kid elbowed him. Hard.
“Had him young.” Grian wheezed as his kidney wept.

Lu Guang's reflection wavers faintly on the glass—white hair mussed, collarbones peeking under the jacket, a faint trail of red along his throat where Cheng Xiaoshi's mouth had lingered last night. The marks on his wrists and hips ache faintly with each small shift, evidence of fingers that had held too hard, too long.
The door suddenly clicks.
Lu Guang freezes.
A moment later, the door bursts open.
"Morning! I bring—" Qiao Ling's voice cuts through the quiet. She stops mid-sentence, halfway in, eyes locking instantly with his.
The front door faces him directly.
Lu Guang doesn't move. For one second, he stands there under the soft light, pale skin visible between the hem of the jacket and his thighs, hair falling into his eyes. His hand still holds the half-empty glass. His mind blanks out so completely that even his breath forgets to come.

The door nudges open. Cheng Xiaoshi stands there, hair a mess, shirt half-tucked, eyes soft in the dim.
"Lu Guang ...."
His name drips out, too soft for someone who'd been shouting exaggerated compliments at Xu Shan Shan and Dong Yi an hour ago.
"You're supposed to be downstairs," Lu Guang says.
"I can't sleep." Cheng Xiaoshi pads in, swaying slightly. "Sleep with me."
"No."
"Please? You're warm. And pretty. And warm."
"Go back down."
Cheng Xiaoshi plants a foot on the ladder.
Lu Guang sits up immediately, pulse ticking sharp. "Step back."
Cheng Xiaoshi does, smiling like he's already won something. Lu Guang presses a hand over his face for a second, then climbs down—moving past him, steady and slow—to the bottom bunk.

Part of a Runaway Hiccup AU, set in RTTE season 4. For two years, dragon hunting operations throughout the archipelago had been plagued by a lone dragon rider, who attacked only at night and was rarely seen. He freed dragons by the dozens and laid forts and encampments to waste from the back of his Night Fury, visage hidden by a dark helmet. No one knew who he was or where he came from. Some thought him to be a demon or a ghost, and those who had witnessed his destructive attacks and his control over dragons called him the Dragon Master.
Viggo had intended to end this scourge once and for all, designing a weapon that could kill the lone rider and those who allied themselves with him. But when Ryker turns the Dragon Hunters against him, Viggo chooses to strike an uneasy truce with the rider to defeat their common enemy, and ends up learning many new things about his long-time foe.

Rama knew what families were, of course. There were many dragons that mated for life, raised their young together and kept in touch with family regularly. But Rama had never had any father figure apart from Cloudjumper. She had no human siblings. She saw no humans that weren't immediately aggressive to her or the dragons she so fiercely protected.
She did not need to know what wasn't directly in front of her. She did not need to think of a world outside of the one she lived in. She knew dragons, lived and hunted and rode with them. She did not know vikings. They were cruel and savage creatures that were to be avoided, or fought, or killed.
Rama never asked about her father, and Valka never told her.
