Summary
Aaron is exhausted and that doesn’t bode well for anyone in his vicinity. If he’d thought undergrad was hard, medical school was hell. He misses the days when finals week meant only exams. Now his university mixes lectures for material that will be tested on finals only days later with finals from other classes. Some of the material is given only twenty-four hours for learning.
Rubbing at his temple, Aaron clicks through his last exam one more time. Each question is overthought and he has way too many sheets of scrap paper at his side as he double checks each and every calculation, diagnosis, and treatment. Finally, he reaches the end of what he can tolerate and hits submit in a fit of annoyance. Regret immediately turns his gut cold as he hurries to lower the brightness of his screen so the girl behind him can’t read his grade as examplify finishes calculating it.
Fuck.
He passed. It was a slim margin, but he passed.

Neil clings to him with every turn and lane change, pulling himself flush to Jean's back each time. It's heartwarming that, after everything they've been through, Neil is still afraid of something. Being afraid of getting hurt, of leaving his people behind. Jean reaches to pat over his hands again, his heart doing this annoying somersault in his chest yet again at the realization that he's happy for them both. Jean also has people to leave behind; reasons to worry about getting hurt.

Summary
Inside the darkness of the Nest, Riko lights a cigarette and asks him what he remembers of his childhood. Neil doesn’t say anything, can’t, because his tongue is swollen in his mouth, bitten down from hours of pain, his lips cracked and sore and split down the sides. He’s shivering, but only because Riko had stopped touching him with a promise to return and the anxiety rolls over him in waves, wracking him, his stomach, his chest, and it’s hard to breathe under all of this blood in his throat, but Riko offers him a drag across the expanse of Kevin’s bed and Neil takes it, their fingers touching, Riko’s warm where they slide over Neil’s, and Neil inhales and coughs and leaves a red stain on the cigarette like lipstick, but Riko doesn’t mind, places his mouth where Neil’s had been.

Neil hated when Riko did this. He would beat Neil until he was unconscious then ‘surprise’ him with things. “I would appreciate new sheets. The blood won’t come out of these.”
Riko nodded. “I’ll have some brought down. Anything else?”
Neil shook his head. “Unless you’re willing to keep the bathroom unlocked.”
Riko studied him for a moment. He reached out and lifted Neil’s chin, running his thumb along his lower lip. “If that’s what you want.”
