    Summary

Grian had obeyed the Watchers his whole life.

He never left the commune, never looked anyone in the eye, showered the Watchers with mindless worship. He took part in the events of the Church and withstood punishments when they decided he deserved them.

Grian had been faithful, loyal. He and Pearl would be turning twenty-one soon.

It was almost time for their Ascension.

    -

or; grian and pearl were raised in a cult. right before their twenty-first birthday - before the ritual sacrifice that leaves them bleeding out on a stage as they earn their wings - they make a plan to escape.

it does not go as smoothly as they hope.

    Summary

    Grian falls.

Dust and desert sand mingling with the blue of the sky and the green of cacti as he tumbles head over heels, and he’s afraid, he’s so afraid, but there’s only one way to end the game, and the fall is long.

Good. He’s glad that he will be lingering in the air for what feels like years. It will give him time to think, to process the overwhelming guilt and horror.

Or, there is a world where friends, family, and the fallen gather to welcome back each player who returns from Third Life. Grian wakes up there as a victor, unable to breathe.

Third Life had a greater effect on Grian than he’d like to admit. Unfortunately, he doesn’t have much of a choice.

    Summary

Stars don't usually fall, and when they do, they don't bleed. Scar didn't expect the sky to split open that night. He didn't expect to find something winged and wrong, feathered in places no person should be, with too many eyes blinking where none should exist. He definitely didn't expect to bring it home.

(Or, Scar finds an eldritch bird abomination in the woods and brings him home. What could possibly go wrong?)

    Summary

Mumbo drops his hands from the ceiling to cross his arms petulantly. “In fact, why isn’t Scar taking up this job?”

Scar is, indeed, sitting very daintily on a plush chair that Grian hadn’t seen him drag in. “Don’t let me bother you!” he says, giving them a wide wave. “Wouldn’t want to interrupt your learning!”

“I didn’t even want to be here,” Mumbo bemoans. “I’m not good at gardening, Grian, we both know it! I could be- I could be building a flying machine right now.”

He says that wistfully, and Grian takes one hand off of the dirt he’s pressing against the ground - ceiling - whatever, and sets it on Mumbo’s very white shirt. “Mumbo,” he says, with a gentle and caring tone. His friend looks up at him.

Mumbo’s dark eyes are practically voids in the dank man-made cavern, and dirt flecks have rubbed their ways onto his face like a smattering of stars.

“I’m only going to say this once,” Grian continues, and the shoulder underneath his hand relaxes. “Get good.”

Or: Grian has some grass issues. Mumbo and Scar try to help.

    Summary

It feels like pain and it burns his throat the whole way through. He could, technically, make it not happen - the liquid touches the wet pink of his oesophagus and he could make it disappear, unwind from existence, impure and foul with a taste to match. He could, but Scar was trying to say something, and sometimes... sometimes Grian unfortunately listened.

He has to swallow a couple more times before he can speak. "It tastes bad." Is what he ends up saying, tongue still tingling from the perceived heat. It is the truth, because Grian does not brave the rust-iron of lies often, even for Scar.

"I could have mixed it with some juice." Scar provides, like he really would have done that with a little bit more time. He would not have, unless Grian had asked for it, and Scar knew very well that he didn't know any better. It was a classic Scar move to make everything worse, and Grian glared at him.

Scar spreads his arms in a 'what can you do' gesture. "They say the second glass is better." Laugh curls around his grin.

Or: How do you keep something as intangible as an angel down on Earth with you? You manipulate it into becoming real, of course.
