Ilya was used to hazing. He had been subjected to it, he had participated in it, and, as a captain, he had stood guard over the rookies and protected them from anything truly harmful. But if he had been asked, Ilya would have approved of this prank. He would have authorized it, given Cliff and Vicky his seal of approval, perhaps even helped orchestrate it.
Any other day, Ilya might have been happy to play along.
But, in perfect dramatic irony, it had not happened any other day. It had happened today. And, cherry on top, of course the rookie had to walk in when Shane was already freaking out about Ilya saying his name.

He would make up maps of these links, just for the exercise of it. What he didn't do was map his connection to Ilya Rozanov, who had yet to walk into his life and crash down all 6 degrees of separation in one reckless fell swoop. Shane didn't know it, but he was already 6 degrees away from Ilya Rozanov. Because Shane was driving to Montreal, and Montreal was where a modeling agency he didn't know the name of was based. And that modeling agency recently put an ad out for a new campaign. That ad was seen by a girl named Svetlana who had curly hair and a quick, smart tongue. And that girl had called her best friend, Ilya Rozanov, and said, “There's work for you in Montreal, if you're good enough.” And Ilya Rozanov had been good enough, and was finally, finally getting out of Moscow after 19 miserable years. The other side of his brain is going: He's hurt you, and you've probably hurt him too, and what if this is your only chance to talk about it? What if Paris makes the difference?
Five months after Sochi, Shane's set to play a charity hockey game in Paris. So is Ilya.
They run into each other in the lobby of their hotel the night before. Twelve hours stretch out in front of them, and Ilya suggests something different: no phones, no expectations, no past, no hockey. Just the city, and whatever they can be when nobody else is watching.
It's obviously a terrible idea, but Shane says yes, anyway.
