Hua Cheng’s brow furrowed deeply. The brush in his hand trembled, dragging a dark stroke across the page and destroying the half-formed character he’s been working on. “You must’ve cared for them a hell of a lot—to throw everything away without hesitation. To offer yourself to me so easily.”
He locked eyes with Xie Lian. “But they clearly didn’t care half as much, did they? They let you walk straight into a pit of demons. They let you become mine. What kind of person does that to someone they love?”

He liked going to the gym and having a healthy lifestyle; the soreness after a good workout both an anchor that kept him sane during the struggles of everyday life, as well as a reminder that he got to where he is today thanks to his body, keeping him alive and breathing for long enough to make something out of himself.
Well, thanks to his body and his borderline scary determination. Once he set his mind on something, he was going to get it no matter what.
And maybe it was that determination now making him work out at a dingy 24/7 gym to keep up his physique. Or maybe it was the pretty receptionist with the warm-brown eyes and soft wild hair wishing him a good workout.
It was a good thing that the deep hours of the night could hide his quickened heartbeat and sweaty palms in disguise for an intense late-night workout.

Lang Qianqiu smiled, clearly in high spirits. “We came at the State Preceptor’s suggestion. He thought it best that I observe and demonstrate my current understanding.”
Hong Hua inclined his head again. “Then it is our good fortune to be under the State Preceptor’s guidance today.” His attention settled once more on Xie Lian, a faint warmth touching his expression.
“Allow me to introduce myself, my name is Hong Hua.” He bowed his head, measured but sincere. “I have long heard of the State Preceptor’s skill. If I may be permitted, I would be honored to witness it for myself.”

How does a slave from the stables end up being shipped off to a neighboring country as a gift to warm the bed of the crown prince? Well, Hua Cheng wasn't actually in the room at the time but, judging by everything he's put together and what Yin Yu has told him, it goes something like this.
1 The King of Yong’an wants to conquer Xianle.
2 The King doesn't want Xianle to know that yet so that he can take them by surprise.
3 To bring this about the King wants a spy deep enough in Xianle’s royal court that they can learn the royal family’s most intimate and military secrets, and who could be better positioned to do that than a concubine?
So 4 the King of Yong’an tells his inner counsel that the first step in his invasion plan is to give the crown prince a concubine.
Or Hua Cheng is given to the crown prince of Xianle as a concubine with the job of seducing him in order to spy on him for the neighboring kingdom of Yong'an, but when real feelings get involved things get ...complicated

Xie Lian yawned, striding around the corner of Hua Cheng’s throne-like seat and lightly plopping down in his lap, snaking his arms around his neck and nuzzling his nose into the soft and cool skin of his throat. He felt Hua Cheng tense under him, his arms hovering around his torso for a couple of seconds before he started to relax. Hua Cheng’s arms slowly enveloped him, his hold becoming more and more secure as Xie Lian continued to nuzzle his neck.
“I’m just glad to finally be home…” Xie Lian mumbled, giving in to another yawn and closing his eyes. As Xie Lian’s breathing evened out, Hua Cheng was left with only one possible conclusion. That this must all be one extremely detailed, extremely evil, and extremely happy dream…
Or, Xie Lian unwittingly gets hit by a time travelling spell while fighting demons and is sent back to a time where he and Hua Cheng have yet to reunite.
