“Okay, that’s good,” Evan says, reaching across the table for Tommy’s hand as though it’s the most natural thing in the world. “So, I know you’re not ready to move in together, but what are you ready for?”
Tommy pauses, considers. “Maybe talking about our exes,” he says at last.
Evan winces. “Yeah, that’s a good start,” he says. “Can’t believe we got six months in and never had that conversation.”
“Well, we got distracted,” Tommy says, sweeping his eyes over Evan’s chest and arms in an intentionally suggestive manner.
“Tommy,” Evan gives him a warning look that falls apart because Evan can’t help but smile. “Just promise me that you won’t go into this thinking it can’t last or I’m not serious about you or that I’m in love with my best friend.”
Tommy winces. God, how was he so stupid? He pulls his hand out of Evan’s and offers his own pinkie. “I promise,” he says. And he means it. He’s going to do everything in his power to set aside his jealousy and his insecurity and put his all into trusting Evan.
Evan grins. “Good,” he says.

Buck struggles to hide the fact that he and Tommy are already engaged by planning an elaborate proposal with the help of 118.
“Are you sure you’re okay with us keeping this a secret for now?” Buck asks, tucking his engagement ring back in its box and popping it into a kitchen drawer. Maddie’s supposed to be coming over later to pick some stuff up for Jee’s bake sale and Buck doesn’t want her accidentally stumbling on his engagement ring. He’ll tell Maddie soon. He’s just not ready yet. “It doesn’t feel like I’m forcing you back in the closet or anything?”
Tommy snorts which Buck can’t decide is attractive or an asshole move. Maybe it’s both. Maybe Buck’s just attracted to asshole behaviour in general. It would certainly explain his dating history.
“What?” Buck asks.
“Evan, this is hardly the same situation as our first date,” Tommy says.
Buck winces. Yeah, still not his proudest moment. Honestly, he’s amazed Tommy was willing to give him a second chance after that.

And it’s not because he needs to piss or Evan’s kicked his ankle in the middle of the night or he’s nearly fallen off the bed again because Evan’s inched them closer and closer to Tommy’s side with his insistent cuddles (all things Tommy loves despite how much he might complain about them).
No. Tommy’s awake because he had that dream again. The one where he and Evan are on a date.

Tommy’s alarm blares and he has to extract himself from Evan’s entangling limbs in order to reach his phone and shut it off.
Evan groans, throwing his arm back over Tommy’s chest, and slotting a knee between Tommy’s legs. “Noooo,” he says, burrowing his head into Tommy’s shoulder, curls tickling Tommy’s neck. The salty scent of sex still clings to his skin after they stayed up for to late for a work night.
“Evan, I need to get ready for work.” Tommy prods at Evan’s arm, pushing it gently down so that Tommy can at least sit up and turn on the light.
Evan hisses, reminding Tommy a little bit of Gollum from The Lord of the Rings. Tommy chuckles and ruffles Evan’s hair. How did he get so lucky? Tommy’s still not sure. Sometimes, he wakes up afraid that this has all been a dream and that Evan’s not with him but with someone younger and cooler. Someone who doesn’t have a shitty past. Who’s less of an asshole. A solidly good guy who hasn’t had to excavate that goodness out from underneath layer upon layer of sedimentary douche bag.

Summary
The view from a wild wyvern’s back was one of Tommy’s favourites. There was something about the distance, the ability to piece together the big picture and know that he was a tiny fragment of the greater whole, the awareness that at any point his control of the creature might slip and lead to his death that was somehow grounding.
Tommy never felt more settled in his own skin than when he was hundreds of meters above the earth with nothing but an ornery tonne of fire and scale between him and falling to his death. Only Tommy’s beast mastery kept the wyvern from breaking free of his control and dropping them into the burning forest below. It was a mental wrestling match, keeping the wyvern restrained, but it was one Tommy revelled in.
Evan rode behind him as they flew together over the Queen’s Wood on a quest handed down by Queen Athena and her consort themselves.
“Do you think a dragon started the fire?” Evan asked. He extended one arm, and a stream of pressurised water shot from his palm, dousing the fire directly beneath them.

Summary
They’re on the roof of a high rise keeping things uncomfortably professional as Buck helps load a patient into Tommy’s helicopter when an explosion from one of the lower floors sends the building cascading down.
The world falls away, rumbling apart, blue sky vanishing behind a wall of broken concrete and twisted rebar.
The last thing Buck sees before he lands on his back and blacks out completely is Tommy’s face covered in blood.

He comes to with a groan, blinking, but there’s no light.
Buck fumbles at his chest until he finds the light strapped to his chest.
It’s not much, but it’s enough to get some idea of his situation. “Tommy?” he calls out, managing to roll onto his stomach. Pain twinges through his neck which is probably a bad side, but he can focus on that later, once he’s found Tommy.
He angles his light, trying to get a handle on the situation.
Buck’s honestly not sure how he’s alive.
Or how long he’s likely to stay that way.

And at first it had. Every time he’d gone to get a rubber band or a takeout menu from the drawer or shoved an unopened package of compostable flatware in because he never knew when he might need then or hid another medical bill he never expected to live long enough to pay from himself as though hiding it could make it go away, he’d had to make a concerted effort not to look at the box.
And eventually he’d not-looked at it enough that he’d stopped seeing it. And then the detritus of his life had shoved the box further and further towards the back of the drawer until he couldn’t see it anymore.
But now it was in his hand.
The box Tommy had refused to take back when Buck had told Tommy he couldn’t get married. That he couldn’t force Tommy to tie himself to Buck in sickness and in health when they were staring down the barrel of far more sickness than health. The kind of sickness that was likely to part them with death

Tommy can’t breathe. His palms tingle. Sweat, cold and slick, coats his upper lip. It feels like a giant has reached down and wrapped its fist around his chest, trapping the air in his lungs.
He can’t breathe.
He barely registers the pain of his knees hitting the rooftop as he fights his way out of his flight helmet trying to get fresh air to his lungs.
“Woah, Kinard! What’s happening?” Donato’s there. She sounds like she’s underwater.
“What happened?” That’s Gonzalez, sounding equally garbled.
Tommy can’t say anything. Can barely even hear his crew above the rushing of his own blood. He squeezes his eyes shut and tries not to see the patient’s face: one of the two they’d flown in from a multi-vehicle pile-up. One half of a couple who so desperately wanted to tell his boyfriend he loved him.
Tries not to think of Ev-Buckley superimposed over the patient – so full of awe and earnestness, a recipe for heartbreak.

Buck groaned and opened his eyes.
He was hanging from the Jeep’s driver’s seat, held in place by the tough weave of his safety belt. Blood dripped onto the deflating airbag under his head. His arms - hanging down, knuckles brushing the roof of his Jeep - felt heavy, like water saturated logs.
