    Summary

    “You either die a hero, or you live long enough to see yourself become the villain.”

     

     

    Robin died a hero, and Dick Grayson lived to see himself become a villain.

    Eight years later, Renegade has died a villain. Maybe Nightwing can live to see himself become a hero.

    But just because his master is dead doesn’t mean Nightwing is free of the scars he left behind.

     

    Or: The Apprentice AU where Dick Grayson lost his sense of identity. But now that Deathstroke is dead, he’s starting to learn how to rebuild himself, one step at a time.

    He’d never dared to even think about the idea, let alone voice it aloud, but his master is gone and never coming back. He’s only twenty-three, yet he feels as if he’s lived lifetimes. Maybe fate won’t be merciful enough to grant one more; still, he thinks he has to try. For everyone who’s ever suffered at his hands.

    “Do you think I could ever be a hero?” the weapon that used to be the Apprentice asks quietly.

    [I don’t know,] Jericho answers. [After everything you’ve done... I just don’t know if that’s possible. But wanting to is the first step. And as they say, you won’t know until you try.]

    Life is two steps forward, one step back. Nightwing is far from okay, but as long as he keeps moving, maybe one day he will be.

    Summary

    Losing Damian not only hurt beyond measure but also made Dick the last Bat standing. He had nothing keeping him in a broken world so goes back in time with only one ally (Damian begs to differ) and no plan except to protect everyone he can, at any cost.

    Dick starts with making sure Jason never dies at the hands of the Joker and proceeds to track down and love his siblings (while maybe also plotting the destruction of the League of Assassins). He just doesn't realize that a clan of highly trained vigilantes are more than capable of realizing that Dick is not okay, and of returning his devotion with their own.
