Luo turned Pei Su by the arm, noticing bruises and cuts across his face. “What is this…? Who did this to you? You didn’t look like this this morning.” His hand lifted Pei Su’s chin, forcing his face left, then right. Pei Su tried to break free, hissing when Luo caught his wrist. The sound made Luo’s chest tighten. One sharp tug and the sleeve slid back, revealing a raw laceration. Luo’s voice cracked, anger and panic colliding. “Care to explain? Don’t make me lose my mind!”
Pei Su said nothing. His hand kept moving, slicing vegetables with steadiness. Luo frowned, stepping closer. “Pei Su?” Then he saw it—blood smeared across the board, dripping from Pei Su’s fingers. His stomach lurched. “PEI SU!” The shout tore out of him. He lunged forward, grabbing Pei Su’s wrist. The knife slipped free, clattering to the floor as terror surging through Luo.

His throat burned, his head was pounding, and his brain wouldn’t shut up about everything he’d screwed up. Stealing from his dad, running, being a piece of shit, the fact that he’d be fucking murdered as soon as he stepped foot at his house—it had all hit him at once.
He’d shaken. He’d cried. He’d felt every bit the damn waste of space his dad always said he was.
And then he’d stopped.
Gotten up. Washed his face. Fixed his shit.
Cause JJ Maybank didn’t stay down. He didn’t sit around whining and waiting for a rescue.
