It’s a cruel twist of fate that the same day Jayce finally plucks up the courage to ask the apothecary’s apprentice to the Kiramman’s Solstice Ball should also be the day his life goes to Hell.

After an explosion in his workshop results in the death of a young woman, the Council sentences Jayce to execution by hanging. He's resigned to his fate, willing to pay the ultimate price for his foolish dreams of bettering the world through a magic beyond his comprehension or control.
That is until a mysterious envelope arrives at Caitlyn's door, marked with the apothecary's seal. The envelope contains a page from the apothecary's inventory log listing dozens of entries, including the ingredients for Living Death, purchased the day of the explosion. Four gold coins are also included, all bearing the mark of the dreaded Eye of Zaun, captained by the ruthless pirate Silco. The third and final item is the most curious of all: a single violet, looking worse for wear, but very much still alive.
Caitlyn’s unshakeable belief in his innocence makes him brave. The potential of the apprentice’s affections makes him foolish.
They set sail for Zaun in the dead of night, headed straight for The Eye.

“What? No. I mean, the answer is obviously love.”Viktor and Jayce meet in a college philosophy class. Every day before class, Viktor comes up with an argument to try to convince Jayce that love isn't the meaning of life, while also trying to win a bet with Vi that he can get Jayce to fall in love with him first and come out of the closet.

Viktor was looking at his neck. It was hard to stop himself. Jayce smiled, put his hand on the side of Viktor’s face, gently pulling his face toward him, where the arteries thrummed, inviting, warm.
“Go ahead. I know you want to.”
Viktor hesitated for a second, looking up at Jayce’s eyes. Jayce looked at him encouragingly. He could smell his arousal thickening, a dense, sweet musk. Viktor unsheathed his fangs, sunk them swiftly into the side of Jayce’s throat.
...Vampire Viktor prides himself on his restraint. There's just one problem. He can't get the taste of Jayce's blood out of his mouth.

Governor Jayce Talis encounters a surprising threat to his re-election campaign in the form of a grassroots candidate from Zaun they’re calling ‘The Herald of Hope.’ Getting romantically involved with his political opponent is probably the least strategic thing he could possibly do, especially when he can't know for sure that Viktor isn't just manipulating him to gain an advantage. He does it anyway.

This starts shortly after Viktor saves Jayce from the ledge, and they begin developing Hextech.
In this universe, Hanahaki is real, but rare. Everyone knows the basic rule: You develop flowers when you love someone who doesn't love you back. Except that's not quite true.
The disease doesn't respond to whether the other person loves you. It responds to whether you believe they could. And Viktor is absolutely, fundamentally convinced Jayce Talis could never love him. So Viktor gets sick. At first, it's tiny...a petal stuck to his tongue after coughing.

"Classes have finished for today," Viktor said mildly, settling one hip against the sill. "Or was there some question of a physical nature you preferred to raise after hours?"
Jayce enters Zaun undercover, convinced that he is the knight on a white horse come to rescue Viktor. After all, his partner's disappearance left both their laboratory and Jayce's life in shambles.
As it happens, Viktor does not need rescuing. He has opened a school, acquired an accidental cult and attracted Silco's not-entirely-political patronage. He may, however, accept some hands-on assistance from a suspiciously overqualified miner.
Viktor recognizes "Jay" immediately. He lets the lie continue to discover how far the man telling it will go. Soon, the alias becomes less a disguise than an excuse to do everything Jayce and Viktor are still afraid to name.
Neither calls it foreplay, until they do.

Grieved though he is to be leaving behind his parents and friends and the only world he's ever known, Viktor cannot help but be drawn to his new husband, and is more than willing to accompany his mate to the other end of the Galaxy.

Summary
It's March, and Viktor knows he doesn't have long left to live. His friends only know that his health isn't great, but not that he's dying. How could he tell them? What could he possibly say to Jayce? No, better to just keep quiet.
Then the unthinkable happens: Ambessa Medarda, for reasons of her own, offers to fund state-of-the-art surgery for him, and suddenly the preciousness of hope dangles enticingly in front of him.
“Viktor?” Jayce’s one word question actually means: excuse me? What? Que? Please explain your outlandish comment?
“I need some time off. Just for a bit. Probably. Then I will be back. Also probably.”
“Probably?” What does that mean? ‘Probably’? That sounds incredibly suspicious. “I need more information.”
What Viktor says next, and in the same tone he uses for what coffee do you want? knocks Jayce for six.
“I am having possibly life-saving surgery, and then I need time to recover.”
Jayce doesn’t so much sit down, as fall backwards. Fortunately his desk is right behind him, otherwise Jayce would be but a sad flesh puddle on the floor. He runs that bewildering sentence back through his mind, trying to sift out the meaning.

Those were the last words they said to each other that evening. In the morning, after breakfast, the Peacekeepers arrived and took Viktor and Maysilee away toward the arena.
OR the train to the Capitol becomes trapped in a time loop, forcing Viktor and Jayce to confront decades of trauma, pain, and the feelings they buried for twenty-five years.
