Maekar had difficulty fitting such a boy into the brother walking beside him. Baelor had always seemed to know better, even as a child.
“You thought they would?”
“Not really. Why would they come alive for me after four generations had failed to do the same?”
“Then why did you even try?”
“Because I thought they might for you.”

So, a dead prince, a false dragon, a drunken prophet, and a knight with more heart than caution walk into Ashford.

Jena Dondarrion had died birthing his second nephew a few months earlier, a red-headed boy that looked just as unsuitable for the realm as Valarr before him. It was neither of their faults — the realm judged the babes on appearance alone, but appearance meant a great deal in the seven kingdoms, especially when a bastard carried the Valyrian look more than Baelor ever would. He needed an alliance that would stabilize his claim. The small council debated at length on the problem.
It appeared Maekar had very neatly solved it for them.
Or, a royal wedding helps their political interests. It does very little for their personal ones.

Aegon turned back to Maekar, his smile returning like a mask of rot. "But you... you are different. You are the only one who looks like my grandson. You are a true dragon, Maekar. Remember that. You stand above the rest of your mud-blooded brothers."
His mind screamed in protest. I am not like you! he wanted to roar. I am nothing like you!

Summary
Baelor and Maekar have been married for more than twenty years, and have a whole gaggle of children. They only wed out of duty, but they’ve been reasonably content together. Baelor certainly wouldn’t complain. After all, he loves Maekar. He’s not in love with Maekar, but the best interests of the realm have always trumped those kind of personal considerations. They’ve been happy enough.
But then comes Ashford Meadow, and the Trial of Seven. In the aftermath, Baelor and Maekar find themselves stewing in mutual anger and resentment. Their stable, boring marriage has firmly hit the rocks. They’re barely able to be in the same room without arguing. They’re also, for the first time in their lives, helplessly attracted to each other.
