Summary
AU Skyeward. Part 4 of The Head and the Heart series. A chance encounter and a conversation send Skye and Alanna into a tailspin, and Alanna demands answers from Quartermain. Meanwhile, Skye finds out that Grant is caught in a bad situation on an operation and secretly breaks protocol to get him out. When Grant returns from his mission, they both realize they’re on a slippery slope with regard to their feelings. While this prompts Skye to make some changes in her personal life, Grant resorts to compartmentalizing feelings he’s not ready to deal with yet.

“Looks like you have one coming up too, Kate,” Natasha said, and she took a step back, looped her arm around his, and gestured to the bag around Sharon’s arm. “You have a Valentine's suitor? That’s very sweet.”
“Isn’t that adorable, Steve?” Natasha said, and she tugged at his arm. “Well, it was nice to meet you, Kate. I hope you enjoy your Valentine.” She gave another sly grin.
Sharon was going to kill her.

His own lips purse in token disapproval while he schools the rest of his face into something mild and noncommittal. "No."

As he left and began walking away, she stuck her tongue out at his retreating back. Before he'd gotten too far, she called out, “Oh, Agent Ward?” She waited for him to turn around and when he did, a slow smile crept onto her lips. “Just so that you know, I really liked the view.”
Skye watched as he slipped the glasses on but before he could activate them she disappeared into her bunk, her laughter ringing out as she closed the door.

Why can’t she – no, why does he still kill, when he has her? When she regularly brings into his life her lightness of being, her goodness, and this regular exposure to her means nothing in the end?
This is her torture, she supposes. This is what she deserves.
She curls even deeper into his shoulder and he holds her closer, maybe thinking she’s cold and she is, cold, cold in his arms, because she really should just leave. She should leave and never come back, maybe give Lincoln a chance, maybe see where that goes.
