She could feel her scalp tingling from the oils. Her fists balled under the water.

There were two things Rosalie knew for certain: one, no human could leave faerie alive; two, pets who played nicely received good food and beautiful clothes, and the ones who didn't... Well. The last three months had been absolute hell since the divorce was finalized. It was supposed to mean getting some bit of her power back, but instead Maggie felt herself circling the drain with every one of their young daughter’s tantrums or pointed questions. Doing it on her own felt far harder than she intended. Getting a new apartment, finding a car in her budget was nearly impossible, and the 45 minute drive there and back every Friday and Sunday was really crunching any semblance of a private life.
Maggie is absolutely sure she just wants a clean break.

Brilliant green eyes shine under the glow of the streetlight. That’s the last thing Andrea sees as sharp, gleaming fangs sink into her neck. She struggles against the vice-like grip, but it’s no use. Lena’s too strong—too desperate to feed. Andrea’s legs give out underneath her, leaving her hanging like a ragdoll in Lena’s arms.
Andrea can hear her suckling her neck, and can feel the blood being pulled from her veins. She grows weaker, pins and needles settling in her limbs. She’s going to die at the hands of the beauty she befriended a mere two days ago, and there’s nothing Andrea can do about it.
Her senses are muted. The jazz music from the bar just through the wall fades into nothing as Andrea feels the life slip from her depleted body. Then, everything stops.

There was a depth to Hope’s words, it always caught Lucy by surprise. As if she was privy to some secret and she was just waiting for Lucy to figure it out. She always carried an old tattered book with her, the gold leaf from the title had long since fallen out. One time Lucy had asked if she wanted something read to her, not only did Hope inform her that she could read on her own, thank you very much but Lucy wasn’t ready for it.

That was another detail that puzzled her. Hope seemed to talk about her mother as if she were two different people. Ma and mama. Ma seemed to be street smart, teaching Hope how to pick locks and kick boys in the shins. Mama knew how to press lines and was the source of the university level vocabulary Hope hurled at her from time to time. As far as Lucy knew there was only one mother.
