Summary
Shane Hollander knows he’s not a small guy. Years of hockey and workouts have built up his muscles, and lucky genetics from his father’s side places him just shy of six feet. He’s checked hockey players half a foot and several pounds more than him, knocked Scott Hunter into the ice in the one fight he’s ever actually thrown hands in. But as much as Shane loves the game, the fast movements, passes, and team camaraderie, there were times where he could only feel regret at following the path of athletic fame. He puts on the media smile he practices in the mirror as he brushes his hair each day, uses the bright lights of press conferences to erase his view of the audience, and keeps his answers simple and focused on hockey.
The number of people outside the arena still makes him feel crushed in on all sides, small. Eyes trained on his face, cameras flashing, pens and cell phones being passed into his hands. The itch of it all settles under his skin.

Bookmarker's Notes
The build was slower than expected but there were so many subtle hints that made it creepy along the way. Even before Shane fully knows he's being stalked he's getting that primal sense that really puts the reader at the edge of their seat with him. Such a good build for equally good payoff.

Summary
During the 2014 MHL Awards, Shane and Ilya find themselves hiding out in the bathroom after a six month silence.
Much to Shane's dismay, Ilya seems he could care less about the hell he put Shane through during those six, painful months.
The two end up worsening their already strained relationship and Shane does not come to Ilya's penthouse afterwards.
The chance of reconciliation is cut short when Ilya reads the stomach-dropping headline that The Montreal Metros' Shane Hollander had been in a severe car accident on his way back after the MHL Awards after party.

What if Shane stood his ground that fateful night in the Vegas bathroom?
What if Ilya had to learn that a few of his last words to Shane after six months of silence was "I want you to suck my dick," and not "I love you"?

“You want to talk to people about me?” Shane asked quietly.
There was something small and confused in the question. But Ilya was still furious and raw.
“Well I would,” he sneered, “if there was anything about you that was fucking interesting to talk about! It would be nice to not be so fucking bored and miserable!”
The second the words left his mouth, he watched the pain roll across Shane's features like a thousand fractures shattering through glass.
Ilya had seen Shane nearly break ribs. He had seen him miss game-winning shots, take hits that left bruises blooming purple and black across his skin. He had never seen this.
Shane closed his eyes for a long moment. He shook his head slightly, a tiny movement, then nodded once as if agreeing with something only he could hear. His face twisted briefly with a fresh wave of pain before he forced it to still.

What if Shane and Ilya don't make up so easily after the Boxing Day fight? The Centaur's plane never malfunctions, so Shane never proposes. Instead, Ilya gives him an ultimatum on coming out and going public. It backfires spectacularly.
