The descent is slow, like watching someone knock your mom’s favorite crystal vase off the shelf and the sheer horror and panic that overwhelms you and slows time down, makes you think that you can get across the room in time to catch it.
But you never do, do you?
The vase shatters and with it, so does every preconceived notion you have of yourself.
That’s what Steve learns.
He learns how to fall, gracefully even.
And in the end, he learns how to shatter.Or
Steve saves Eddie in the Upside Down and it's hilarious and it broke Steve wide open.

Both him and his dad knew exactly what he was referring to—the frequent arguments about AIDS, or politics, or anything that clashed with his dad’s stuck-in-the-past opinions. It was 1986, he should act like it. “Ooh, God hates queer people, God hates this fucking backwater town.”
“Michael! Language!” The protest was rehearsed, his mom’s heart clearly wasn’t in it. He wasn’t sure if she even would’ve bothered if it wasn’t for the fact that Will and Jonathan were there.

A sniffle and a nod that knocked against Eddie’s jaw.
“Okay. Here it is. What happened to you was awful.” He didn’t let his hands falter in their soothing path even as he struggled for the right words. “Your parents were supposed to keep you safe. You were a child. You needed them to survive, physically and emotionally, and they took that safety from you."
Steve shuddered, and Eddie squeezed him closer. “I’m so sorry, sweetheart. I’m so fucking sorry that they made you feel unsafe in your own home. In your own body. I wish I could go back in time and steal you away. No one deserves that. I wish the only touch you knew was kindness. Because that’s what we should be to each other, right? We should be kind.”

“You need sleep, sweetheart.”
With his fingers on Steve’s jaw, he had the unexpected delight of feeling the rush of heat that suffused Steve’s face at the nickname.
“’m fine,” he mumbled, mouth slightly squished in Eddie’s grip. He hadn’t made any effort to extricate himself, instead watching Eddie with glazed eyes. Eddie would be very appreciative of the expression under different circumstances, but as it was, he felt mostly concerned. And a little horny, but mostly concerned.
“Sure you are, sunshine.” He let go of Steve’s face, and the boy swayed toward him. Eddie stood, and reached down to pull Steve up with him, ignoring the whining. “Nope, you’re taking a nap,” he said, voice allowing no protest.
Of course, Steve protested anyway. “Eddie, I’m at work, I can’t just take a nap—”
“Really?” Eddie says. “That’s gonna make this a really interesting phenomenon. Cause if you can’t and then you do, well some great law of nature of physics must have been broken, and we’ll get to document it, and we can make millions of dollars selling our discovery—”

Summary
Steve never minded living in Eddie’s shadow. He liked the chaos, the noise, the way Eddie looked like he might catch fire on stage at any second. What he minded, though he’d never admit it out loud, were the songs. Every crowd screamed Eddie’s words back at him, but none of them were for Steve. Not the angry anthems, not the messy love songs, not even the ballads that left reporters breathless.
Steve told himself it didn’t matter. He didn’t need the spotlight, didn’t need Eddie to spell his name in lyrics. He just needed Eddie to come back to him when the lights went down.
But five songs in, after years of motel rooms, arenas, fights, and backstage kisses that tasted like smoke and blood, Eddie finally wrote the one that was.
And Steve wasn’t sure his heart could take it.

After a while, everything and everyone Elim Garak became was true, especially when it was all a lie, and he learned to live with that state of not-being, of never wanting.
But in exile, everything had changed, and when his father presumably died, and then definitely died, and Elim had finally freed himself of his own deceptions-
Perhaps there was someone else who could learn to want right alongside him.
