    Summary

Brother, you crouch before me, eyes piercing, and watchful. Cyclopsed as I am, I see them roam my skin, tracing the wrinkled eddies of my scars as they habitually do.  I read your face, the furrow of your brows, the concern in your lips. You wear worry like a shroud, wielding love as a shield to hide behind.

“Alicia,” you say, throat thick. “Your letter.”

    =====

Atop the sky-piercing cliffs of the Canvas, Alicia Dessendre contemplates her final choice and action as she addresses her brother one final time.

    Summary

“I just can’t- I fucking can’t believe this! How long have you been a cop?”

Jean’s insides bristle. He was asked to transfer to the 41st - not even asked, actually, asked implies there was a choice. This wasn’t a choice. Not that he would have refused at the time - the 41st is the place where anyone who wants to be anybody goes, at least while they are young and stupid enough to crave a hero’s death.

No, Jean was told to pack his things. That *someone* at the 41st pulled some strings and wanted him. Jean doesn’t know who, Jean doesn’t ask those kinds of questions. He’s starting to consider that it was a lie. Maybe his precinct traded him in in exchange for someone from here. And he’s the sloppy seconds no one wants. That would track.

And it sure feels that way too, watching Sergeant Du Bois rub at his forehead shaking his head, his cigarette wasting away between his fingers. One thing is clear - if anybody at the 41st didn’t pick Jean, it’s Harrier Du Bois, who looks two seconds away from kicking a trashcan and throwing a fit about it.

    “Two years, sir.”

Harrier closes his eyes, takes a deep breath and leaves the room without telling Jean to come with.

    Summary

So—yeah, that was how Jean ended up standing at his ancient half-busted stove at seven o'clock at night, with Lieutenant Kim Kitsuragi and fucking Harrier Du Bois sitting at his kitchen table chatting away about the case. The real question is why. Jean is afraid the answer to that is quite simple: He wants them here.

Jean cooks Harry and Kim a good meal, which they intend to thank him for.

    Summary

You figure out a lot of things when Kitsuragi transfers to the 41st Precinct.
The first thing is that Kitsuragi is as queer as a two reál piece.
The second thing is that Harry wants to fuck him.
The third thing is that Harry has not figured this out yet.
The fourth thing is that Kitsuragi has.
The fourth-and-a-half thing is that Kitsuragi also wants to fuck Harry.
The fifth thing is that Kitsuragi is a patient man.
The sixth thing is that you also want to fuck Kitsuragi.
The seventh thing is that Kitsuragi figures this out the day you lean in to light his cigarette on the station roof. Your hand is shaking because Harry almost got the three of you fucking killed that day by being his stupid fucking bullheaded self, who cares if you caught a fucking murderer, and while he’s downstairs getting stitched up, you and Kitsuragi are up on the roof smoking. Your hand is shaking badly and Kitsuragi reaches out and grabs your wrist to steady it, the warmth smooth leather of his gloves on your bare wrist where your sleeve’s pulled up. You draw in a sharp breath and he looks at you and you can see from the sharpening of his eyes that he’s figured it out.

    Summary

After the loss of the station’s Coupris 40, the Captain tells all of you you’ve got to fundraise some money to replace it. Bake sale, motor carriage wash, increase in taking bribes - ha ha, he says, just kidding, don’t do that one - he doesn’t care. Just do it.

    You get a brilliant idea:

YOU: “We should do one of those calendars, you know, the ones with firefighters, and the Moralintern, and the Coast Guard-”

JEAN VICQUEMARE: “They make ones with women, too, Harry."

YOU: “Do they really? Kim, is that true?”

KIM KITSURAGI: Kim shrugs a shoulder, as if to say, don’t ask me.

(Or, they do the damn calendar).
