Summary
Dwarves can't swim. They are made of stone and they are quick to believe they are incapable of staying afloat. In reality, they are just a bit too heavy and dip faster than any other race, but that does not imply they're incapable of swimming! But information carried through generations can grow out of proportion, until dwarves are made believe they simply can't swim at all.
But Bilbo knows better.
This story consists of 4 smaller stories that all tie into each other, but could be read separately;
1. Bilbo learns that dwarves can't swim, and Fili and Kili nearly drown
2. Bilbo teaches the company of dwarves to swim
3. That same night, Bilbo teaches Thorin to swim
