“I didn’t need anyone to tell me if it was okay or not,” the boy says. “He’s the most important person to me, and I know that’s all that matters.”
“It’s different,” Yoshiki mumbles, dropping his chin into his hand. “Hikaru ain’t— I mean— it’s just— he’s… a monster.”
The boy eyes him, silent for a moment. He studies Yoshiki, but he’s not judgmental, and it’s weird, he thinks. Not being judged.
“I was a monster, too,” the boy eventually says. “He still loves me.”
__OR: crossover moment!!! the jjk trio are sent to kubitachi on a mission to identify and monitor potential curse activity in the area. at the same time, yoshiki meets a couple of city folk who just might be able to change his entire life’s perspective.

Yoshiki had died that night on the mountain, and what stood in his place wasn’t him, but something else. It wore his body, mimicked his voice, but the warmth that Hikaru had always known was gone. Instead, there was a thing that couldn’t understand love, but craved it. A thing that wanted to keep Hikaru close, to protect him, but with a twisted sense of ownership.
Hikaru felt it, the difference. The affection was real, but it wasn’t right. This thing, this creature, had no idea what it was doing. But it needed him—needed to believe it was Yoshiki, needed to cling to whatever human emotions it could borrow.
Hikaru couldn't look away. It was Yoshiki’s body, his face, his memories. But not his soul. And the longer he stayed, the more he wondered if he was lying to himself, convincing himself that love could exist in something so broken, so wrong. He couldn't run. Not from the thing that replaced his friend. And not from the twisted love it gave. Even if it meant accepting something that wasn’t real.

Summary
Life or death on NML is determined by big hunks of metal piloted by humans and highly advanced computer programs, an alliance that's only gotten more and more unsteady in recent years. Wolfwood was raised to be a pilot, to keep everyone safe, and no matter what he has to do he'll make it happen. Even if sometimes making it happen means going well out of his comfort zone.
At least his new copilot is easy to get along with. It's hard dealing with rogue mechs and giant sand worms if you don't have a good working relationship with the person inside your head for the whole thing.
