“Congratulations on your promotion, Major. Well-earned, I expect. You always were destined for greater things.” He tried to keep his voice light.
“Thank you.” Havers paused, like he was weighing his next words. In the sunlight, James could see more clearly the price of battle. Scars laced jaggedly across his face, disappearing into the collar. He was still lovely, just a touch careworn, James reflecting on his own aging as well, the noticeable stoop and a softening of his face. “Please, though, you do not have to address me as Major.”

James’ impulsivity, spurred on by memories of their time together at Button House and Havers’ letters from the front, acting on emotions he doesn’t quite understand, is saved by Havers’ quick-thinking. Havers proposes that they pick up where they left off, but he is much changed by the war.
