    Summary

"An invisible red thread connects those who are destined to meet, regardless of time, place, or circumstance. The thread may stretch or tangle, but it will never break."

The Maomao that had read those fated words was just a child—naive and sharp-eyed but so full of heart. The Maomao that read it had clumsy hands and chipped teeth, yard-tanned skin and endless questions. She hadn't the faintest clue of destiny's cruel design, and it would be cruel. There would be hate and horror and humorless irony in every turn, but that young Maomao grinned and relaxed down into the sunbaked grass with a crude legends children's book beside her. If her destiny was already set, it didn't matter what she did.

    Summary

    Edited August 9th 2025:
The linens must have felt softer when her brain was seeping with exhaustion. That was Maomao’s first thought.

She blinked, head pounding, and tasted blood at the back of her throat. The inside of her cheek was bitten open. Her arms were pinned before her. Her ankles were bound. A rag had been stuffed in her mouth, now half-dangling from her jaw. And only her sweat-scratchy nightwear covered her body.

The air smelled of moss, urine, and stagnant water.

She was not in her room anymore. She remembers the reward, leaving Jinshi alone on the other side of the door selfishly, just so she could have at least one more night of willful ignorance.

“Oh,” she exhaled. She'd been taken.

    Summary

Maomao turned toward her, deliberate and teasing. "You think I look pretty like this?"

Shisui’s breath caught audibly. Her hands flinched like she meant to fold them, then forgot how as they fell to her sides. "Maomao, I think you’re gorgeous."
The words came out too fast, too earnestly. Like she'd been holding them in her throat for hours, maybe days.

    Maomao blinked. Then grimaced.
She leaned back slightly, head tilting in disbelief. “Don’t say that.”

Shisui’s face fell, mouth parting. “Why not?”

The girl in question gestured at herself vaguely—down at her flat chest, her wrapped limbs hiding the horrors any normal girl would shy away from, her sun-darkened skin. “You see me. Can't you?”

Or, my heart is broken so welcome to another scene between my two favorite girls in this cursed work of art

    Summary

"It stays the same, and it hurts just as much with each passing thought." Maomao could feel his eyes on her as he spoke, but she wasn't going to meet his gaze.

"But it doesn't get any harder either. You've been through the worst of it, eventually it will feel so familiar the pain will be an old friend. It'll be a testament to all the love you felt, and you might even find comfort in knowing it never changed. But you'll grow, and you'll find other things to love that won't take his place but will keep you busy. You'll grow, and the pain will stay the same, but with all you've changed it'll feel like the grief did to."

    Summary

“You’re hallucinating,” she added- a diagnosis. “Classic. Sleep deprivation, grief, dehydration… you’ve really hit the trifecta.”

He reached for her, fingers trembling.

“Sleep; I’ll still be here when you wake,” she whispered.

    “You promise?”

She smiled. Not smug, not sharp—just true, in that rare way he had only glimpsed once or twice, when she forgot to guard herself.

    “I promise.”

He didn’t mean to close his eyes, he only meant to blink.

But the weight of her words was like balm, and he finally let go.

The last thing he felt was the press of her fingers brushing his hair back, the way she always did when he’d annoyed her. As if comforting him was just another form of scolding.

His last thought was a thanks to his own mind, for granting him this poignant respite from the hellish world he's found himself in.

    Summary

Maomao woke with wet lashes and cold fingertips. The faintest trace of jujube still lingered in her throat.

    Outside, the house was silent.

It could barley be called morning, but she'd sleep no more this night.

    Laba had arrived.

    Summary

In the hallowed halls of the Inner Court, where poison is easier to acquire than a compliment, two geniuses stand at a crossroads.

He is Jinshi — beautiful, brilliant, terrifyingly competent. His enemies fear him. His allies suspect him. The maids daydream of him. But only one person has ever dared to tell him to shut it mid-sentence.

She is Maomao — apothecary, poison enthusiast, failed courtesan in-training, and chaos incarnate. Emotionally stunted, intellectually overclocked, and built entirely out of drugs and spite.

    They are in love.

Unfortunately, they are also complete idiots.

    Summary

She set the cup beside him. “You know,” she said lightly, though the words felt heavier than they should, “some people consider silence a relief. Peaceful. Blessed.”

He tilted his head, a glimmer of curiosity in his eyes.

Maomao couldn’t suppress the hint of a smile. “Not me. I don’t like not knowing what you’re plotting.”

His lips quirked upward, the movement slow and deliberate. He pointed at the tea, then at her, then mimed a swirl in the air.

“Ah, yes,” she interpreted. “I poisoned you. Wouldn’t be poetic justice if I didn’t.”

He rolled his eyes, mouthing, 'Brat'.

    Summary

She reaches into the fold of her sleeve and presses her fingers to the small vial hidden there—her own blend, dried mugwort and yarrow, something Luomen had once sworn warded off grief. “Placebo,” she’d told him. “Powerful things,” he’d replied, with that wheezing smile.

She closes her hand around it.

Then she walks, one foot in front of the other, away from the only place in the world that had ever smelled like safety.

    She does not look back.

    There is no point.

The wood is rotting. The roof leaks. And the apothecary—without Luomen—smells like mold and loose ends.
