Alessia’s heart stops and then restarts, beating twice as fast. Leah regards her silently and Alessia tries to remember words. Any words. A single word. The surprise must be easily read on her face because Leah chuckles, the sound wrapping around her and sending a warm tingle down her spine.
“What?” she finally chokes out.
“You should come with me.” Leah’s voice is soft and slow like if she says it too quickly Alessia might bolt. It’s not far off from the way Alessia feels, but she’s too overwhelmed to move.
Or
Alessia needs a break after a crazy busy year and Leah makes her an offer she can’t refuse.

“Do you still want to have a baby?” Leah whispered.
She was pretty sure that she completely threw Alessia off who just stared at her in disbelief for a second, almost losing balance on the arm that she was leaning against after lifting her head from Leah’s shoulder so quickly. Leah laughed as she wrapped an arm around Alessia so she didn’t fall backwards. She had become an expert in her wife’s clumsiness over the years.
Alessia regained her composure and thought for a second, “Yeah,” she whispered with a little uncertainty before pausing and smiling, “Definitely,” she added more confidently.

“Oh..." Carson breathes, curling her fingers in softly. Greta trembles a little, scared of what she’ll say, and Carson feels it. She squeezes her grip, smiling. “Me too,” she says, swallowing. “I believe in that too. Someone to- to be with.”
“Yeah?” Greta asks shyly. Carson reaches to tuck her hair behind her ear, cupping her jaw so that Greta will look at her.
“Yeah,” she replies.
And at this kitchen table, something shifts between them. The light hits Greta’s blush differently as they look at each other, and Carson hasn’t stopped smiling since they started talking. This beating heart of the Rockford house - where the Peaches gather and laugh and drink and eat - holds them in all of its softness, watches them quietly in their falling and knows that they will catch each other. There is nothing more wonderful than being held this way, than feeling at home.
(Or, the story of Greta and Carson growing up and growing older together, how they change and become, as told by the kitchens they occupy throughout their lives.)

Greta wished she could tell Carson how good she felt. How her hands on her hips burned through her dress, warming her up. How she smelled intoxicatingly of soap, sweat, and the leather of her baseball mitt. How much she thought about how this would feel every second of every day. But it was risky enough that Greta’s hands were now unbuttoning Carson’s dress, sliding underneath her bra, and Greta was too scared to make any more noise. The sound of Carson’s heavy breathing seemed to fill the tiny room.
Or, Greta is following the rules, but she’s not being careful.
