His whole world feels like it’s turning upside down. Then again, it’s felt like that ever since he managed to escape The Commission.
Because, for his entire conscious existence, he’s been trained to do one thing, and one thing only. His hands were not made for gentle kindness or soft touch. His hands were created for one thing, and one thing only: killing.
Through the brutality and the loss, he kept his head down and did everything he had to do to just survive. He thought he knew everything he needed to know about the world. The sun rises in the East and sets in the West. The sky is blue, grass is green.
Distraction is weakness. Weakness is death.
But he’s slowly learning that, maybe, there’s more to life than just making it to the next day...

The first time Tommy dies, he’s seventeen, and they tell him he’s a hero when the Angel’s bladed feather sinks into his chest.
If Tommy could go back in time and tell himself one thing as blood ran rivers down his chest, it wouldn’t be comforting.
“Get used to it,” he’d say, as cold as the blade that had done this to him. “This is all you are now.”

Summary
Wilbur takes his last trembling breath.
Tommy pulls away from Wilbur's side, bile rising in his throat. He stands on shaking legs, finds his stray knife on the ground and picks it up with blood-coated hands.
He impales himself with the knife in one quick, practiced stab.
His last thought is this: he is not losing his best friend like this- he is not losing his best friend at all.
or, Wilbur dies on a Tuesday afternoon. Tommy wakes up on a Tuesday morning. So it goes.

Summary
Leta Sangha is a McLaren racing engineer who spends most of her year traveling with the circus that is the Formula 1 paddock and the rest of her time caring for her ailing grandfather, a motorsport superfan who practically raised her. Like any good engineer, she compartmentalizes problems so she can solve them one by one. To add another human into the equation of her life—an unpredictable, emotional human—feels like too much, even on her best days.

The school saw you next to the alarms moments before they were triggered, there’s no way it wasn’t you!” Someone was honking their horn ahead. The lights were growing bigger. Tommy blinked, sitting up straighter. The car ahead of them was really close. “Just stop fucking lying—”
“Wilbur!” Tommy screamed and lunged for the wheel. But it was too late.
OR
A car crash ends with Tommy and Wilbur trapped off the side of the road, injured and fighting for their lives. Wilbur wants them to survive. Tommy can't lose another family.
