Summary
Shoko Ieiri does not think of herself as the kind of person who changes. She intends to keep her head down, pass her classes, and leave no mark behind. It feels easier that way.
Utahime Iori arrives with a list of goals that stretch well beyond four years. She has worked for this her entire life. She knows how to follow rules. She knows how to succeed. What she does not know is what to do with the quiet hours between rehearsals, or the way loneliness settles in once the lights in the practice rooms turn off.
They meet during their first week on campus. They do not get along at first. They do not understand each other. They become friends anyway.
Around them, their friends fall in and out of love. Classes grow harder. Expectations grow heavier. Utahime struggles to hold herself together. Shoko pretends she has nothing to lose. They hurt each other without meaning to. They forgive each other without saying so.

“Scared you’ll lose?” she taunted.
Gojo smiled at her, showing all his teeth. “Never.”
Gojo and Shoko have a lot in common, including both being in love with their senpai, Utahime Iori. But while they're fighting for her attention, Utahime doesn't see why she has to choose.

Shoko smiled a half-hearted smile that never reached her eyes. "A Jujutsu sorcerer without a vice. I might as well be dead."
Utahime closed her eyes and breathed deeply before opening them again. "I'm sorry, I'm just as bad. I'm taking it out on you."
"Where would we be without our awful coping mechanisms?" Shoko extinguished the cigarette in the ashtray on her desk and set the bottle down. A second ashtray. Maybe she did have a problem if she needed to have several ashtrays in a single room. "Drugs, alcohol. I suppose we could take up gambling or get a shopping addiction."
"Sex," Utahime supplied.
Shoko paused, a flash of warmth shot through her. "Yeah, with who?"
"Who else?"
