On the afternoon they arrived in Cabo for their all-expenses paid stay at the town’s nicest resort, Carlos arched an eyebrow and huffed a judgmental, “really TK?” when he insisted on buying a half dozen oysters from a man shilling them to tourists up and down the beach, claiming the shellfish he was schlepping in a haggard-looking bucket to be freshly caught that morning.
TK smirked at the face Carlos made as he slurped a whole oyster out of its shell, moaning at the sweet taste as he swallowed it whole, dark eyes trained on his throat as he swallowed.
“Mmm, you should try one.”
“No. No thanks.”
“You wouldn’t believe the mouth feel.”
“Gross. Don’t say mouth feel.”
“It goes down so smooth. Mmm. You know!” TK said, wagging his eyebrows and fighting to keep from prematurely laughing at his own joke. “It’s almost like swallowing your—”
“Okay!” Carlos all but shouted. “That’s enough about the oysters.”

When Jonah gets in trouble at school, Carlos is called to meet the principal, who seems more flustered by him than he is about picking up his kid from the principal's office.

“Well, before we continue, I just have to ask…” She tilts her head, trying for effortless and playful. “Is there a Mrs. Strand Reyes?”
Carlos straightens in his chair, brow furrowing again, clearly confused by the direction in which this conversation is going.
“…No?”
Principal Hargrove lets out a little laugh.
“That’s too bad,” she says, voice slipping into what she thinks is a flirty tone. “I’m, um… I’m single too. Nobody’s ever had the cajones to try.” She actually sings the last part, dropping her voice into a low baritone and wiggling her eyebrows while pointing at her bare ring finger.
Carlos blinks.
Then he calmly lifts his left hand from Jonah’s shoulder, revealing the shiny gold band on his own ring finger.
“There is a Mr. Strand Reyes,” he says matter-of-factly.
Principal Hargrove’s eyes go saucer-wide. She actually hears the hollow thunk of the Windows crash error sound as her brain freezes. The system needs a reboot.
“Oh.”
