Shane heard a strangled shout tear free from his mouth, and then his body was moving without his brain’s input. He flew across the ice, ripping his gloves off and reaching for Ilya’s throat. He wrapped his fingers around the warm skin, feeling the flow of blood pulse harder with each beat of Ilya’s heart. His eyes raced across Ilya’s face, desperately looking for a sign that his boyfriend was still with him. Ilya’s eyes were wide and glazed, staring past Shane instead of at him. His face was losing color rapidly, turning a sickly shade of white that mirrored the ice beneath him. His mouth was open, loose and slack, mouthguard still jammed into his upper jaw. Shane watched in terror as Ilya grew limper in his arms.

During a Boston-Montreal game, Ilya's neck is cut by a skate, and Shane is forced to witness the love of his life bleeding out on the ice in front of him. All of the plans they have made seem to be slipping away before his eyes, right when they were so close to finalizing Ilya's transfer to Ottawa. “Hello,” she answered the phone.
“Hello, I am looking for Miss Rosanov,” a man’s voice replied.
“This is she.”
“Aa, Miss Rosanov, I am very sorry for your loss. My name is Mr. Aliev. I am contacting you regarding the payments of your high school. We require proof of the new school year to proceed with payments.”
“I’m sorry, I don’t understand what you mean,” she replied, confused.
“I am sorry, Miss. Are you aware of your personal school funds? I have been communicating with your mother, god rest her soul, up to this point. I assumed you knew. Your uncle Ilya Rosanov has created a trust fund to ensure your schooling and your wellbeing, provided any expense is justified, under the aforementioned conditions,” the voice stopped, expecting an answer back.
She knew she had an uncle; he had moved to Canada to play hockey. No one in her family talked about him.

Summary
Shane had truly believed that the worst was behind them.
Mostly because his barometer for ‘worst’ had been recalibrated from a weighted mass of worry lodged in the base of his throat about league reactions, and the strain of hiding his heart, rewritten in an instant where he'd known that the worst was actually a notification bubble in a corner where it never showed, next to a name that taught Shane what it was worth to be alive at all; that opened up and spelled terror and the end of the whole goddamn world—but then it wasn't. They didn't end. Shane didn't lose. They made it through the worst.
Surely that meant everything would be okay moving forward, since they'd already survived the worst.

Or: Shane genuinely does believe they've made it through the storm, that the worst came for them and they walked out okay. Breathing. Alive. Together.
Shane—waiting for his fiancé in a hotel room, watching the man he loves more than life collapse on the ice in high definition, the light vanishing from his eyes, the feed cutting just before a crash cart descends upon him—
Shane realizes swiftly—painfully—that he was really fucking wrong.
