“The warriors are going to come and get me,” Jade said, out loud to the air. “They just have to collect everybody who got blown away in the storm, and that’s going to take a little bit of time. I need to—” She took a deep breath, looking around. “I need to take care of myself until they get here.”
If you got lost in the forest you were supposed to stay in one place, but this didn’t seem like a good place to stay. She didn’t have any way to start a fire, and the herdbeasts visible above the grass were too big for a half-grown queen to take down by herself. There weren’t even any fish in the water, just a series of scuttling crabs the size of her thumbnail. And—she eyed the crevice she’d been in overnight—there really wasn’t any shelter.
“If there’s a fire, that means a groundling city,” Jade said, out loud again to hear herself talk. The wind pulled at the dry grass growing out of the ruins, a rustling wave. “Groundlings have shelter and food, and if I go there and stay there, the warriors can find me there, right?”
OR: Jade is left alone in a groundling city as a child, and there she meets a groundling named Moon

Really. It's a terrible idea. Dragging a rogue SecUnit home for a one night stand is probably the most dangerous thing it's ever considered.
Luckily, the rogue SecUnit in question is Three. And if Three knows one thing about itself, it's that it wants to help.
Somewhere on Preservation, there's a tiny cabin on a big homestead, where stubborn purple flowers refuse to die. In the cabin, in the aftermath, a pair of equally stubborn constructs have an idea that, just maybe, isn't terrible at all.

Gyrus had been dead in the black box for a long time when he started experiencing glitches. Sensory bleed-through. It started with his eyes: his living body's field of vision replacing the static image of stars on the flight deck's viewscreens. But it didn't stop with vision, and before too long, he was along for the ride, experiencing everything his new self did.
So Gyrus watched, and something with Kodya's face watched with him. Ran its fingers through his hair. Kissed him with all the sweetness of memory. Distracted him from the experience of suffocating to death over and over again. Whispered awful truths into his ear. But of course, just like everything else in the black box, the thing that wasn't Kodya was only another part of Gyrus's own mind. A construct of memory and longing, guilt and fear. If there was something else, something darker watching from behind those too-blue eyes? Gyrus didn't want to know.

Dean walks into his local bank one day and notices that someone has filled the old gumball machine with these tiny, wiggling, sentient angels in individual plastic packaging. Deeply concerned about their air supply and the fact that they're trapped there in the sun, he starts pumping in quarters to rescue them. This is worse than leaving a dog in an overheating car.
Now he's got forty of the little guys running all over his house, and god knows how many others might be trapped and dying all over the city.

It puzzles Castiel, where Dean draws the line between what is meaningful and what it is worthless.

Cas comes back. It's not exactly the reunion that Dean is expecting.

Dean stares at him, flummoxed. Cas quite literally poured his heart out to Dean, gave a truly sappy and distressingly romantic speech and everything, then proceeded to give his life so that Dean could live his. And he wants to act like he doesn't want to see Dean, be around him, touch him?
Actually, Dean's ninety-nine percent sure that Cas probably wants to fuck him, and while he has no clue how he feels about that, he's pretty goddamn sure that means Cas doesn't get to act like this and make it authentic.
It feels strangely real, though, as if Cas wants nothing more than to get as far away from him as possible. This is a blatant contradiction. Even someone as weird as Cas doesn't want to get away from the person they have the desire to fuck five ways to Sunday, that they're in love with. That's not how these things work, so Dean isn't buying it.
