Caitlyn feels every weary muscle in her body screaming at her but she pushes herself upright and crawls across the duvet. It’s been nearly eight months since they started sharing this bed, since words like ‘oil’ and ‘water’ and ‘sister’ and ‘mother’ bound them together, and Vi has never let her wake up cold and alone before. She folds herself around the other woman, letting the short, spiky ponytail at Vi’s nape tickle her own collarbone, and Caitlyn feels how hot she is when their cheeks press together. Briefly, it seems like Vi exhales in relief, but then she tenses and groans, and Caitlyn knows instantly that it’s worse than she’d thought.
