Summary
Zanka didn’t know what to make of Fu Orostor.
He had trailed in after Enjin one day, trembling and hunched over, clutching that doll of his in a white-knuckled grip. It was hard to imagine Fu — meek, shaky, short-for-his-age Fu — being the same person who had won against Jabber so easily.
The thought makes something hot and heavy settle in his gut. There’s the usual envy-frustration-indignity, but there’s something else that Zanka can’t name.
Zanka tries not to concern himself with the workings of geniuses — besides Rudo; despite Riyo’s teasing about how awfully they get along, he is his instructor, after all — but Fu makes him pause. He lacks the steel, the fire-bright surety in his eyes that Zanka has seen in other geniuses: in Rudo, in Jabber, in Hyo.
And so, Zanka finds himself… watching.

But then this was a world in war, all was still in hell, they had war dogs beyond the borders and inside the walls, and Gai was all but lost since Kakashi daren't remembered and - could Kakashi even say he was a good friend to Gai? He couldn't even, shame on him, remember the last time he'd actually talked to Gai OR bothered to keep tabs on his well-being or life (that was ages, years ago, right after Gai had just received his chuunin vest and almost immediately went MIA with his entire team after their dispatch to what was supposedly a deadly mission), so naturally, of course Kakashi wouldn't know if the bastard sired a son or not.
"Hey, kid, sorry for staring so much. Where's your mother? Or father?"
"I have no parents. I'm an orphan."
And Kakashi, senior in living through this cruel, cruel world, but had his - he was proud of it, he begrudgingly admitted so - talents and ingenuity to survive on, was going to make sure this child survived in this world.
