Not the street kids who skate at the edge of the park. Not the ancient halmeonim in the nursing home. Not the business men carousing in bars, or chaperones guiding kids through the museum, or buskers plucking away at an inherited bipa. There are demons in the city. And they are hungry.

“So what will you do now?” Kate asks curiously.
It is a simple question, but it's one Yelena has avoided asking herself for years, finding the moments it slipped through the cracks of her best laid plans, now all ground into dust at her feet, to be particularly uncomfortable. There has always been a job to do; or rather, there has always been a job Yelena has taken, hoping it might sand the gritty surface of her new reality down or at least fill in the gaps she did not care to peel further apart and examine closer.
It has been a lifetime since she has had nothing to do.

“Yeah, unless I don’t finish my degree.” It’s a grumpy little mumble, barely meant for Yelena, but she responds to it nevertheless.
“What do you mean?“ she demands. “You only have a small amount of time left! Why would you stop now?”
“I don’t know,” Kate murmurs, and Yelena is bewildered to hear a faint echo in her own emptiness, coming from nearly six thousand kilometers away. “I just don’t really know what to do now, I guess. Clint says I’m the new Hawkeye, but that’s not official or anything. And even when it is, it’s going to be a lot of training. So I’m waiting to wait, or something, and — and I don’t know why I’m talking to you about this, actually.”
“Sometimes, it’s nice to just talk,” Yelena thinks and then says. “But I don’t think you should drop out of school, Kate Bishop. School is cool.”
