Grazilaxx defected from his hive to preserve the one thing illithids weren’t meant to have—independence. Now a founder of the Society of Brilliance, he specializes in aberrant psychology, and his newest subject of study is a highly unusual beholder named Lorthuun. With their flair for metaphor, complicated history with the Zhentarim, and dangerous split mind, Lorthuun rapidly drags Grazilaxx out of his comfort zone and into a spiral of fixation.
What began as a clinical study warps into mutual fascination as the icy mentality of an illithid clashes against the chaotic heat of a beholder. It doesn’t take long before that fascination curdles into obsession. And obsession, the most dangerous emotion among aberrations, soon metastasizes into a twisted form of connection.
This is a slow-burn dark romance about identity, control, and the unbearable intimacy of trust among monsters, told through the perspective of an illithid struggling to reconcile his instinctive emotional repression with his yearning for psionic resonance.

Summary
From a lifetime in the sept, Howler grew used to the presences of other psychics; she found comfort, amongst her former masters. The only beings that she thought she could relate to, with her mind warped to fit their use and her body conditioned to suit the darkness. They told her that this could never happen. She could not survive ‘freedom’, adapted to servitude to the illithid.
But they never accounted for… this.
A thrall, granted mercy by an ironic twist of fate, must now navigate freedom while facing dangers beyond what she ever fathomed illithid could be capable of.
