The ways they answer these deep personal questions are just?? Chef's kiss???
The boys actually use their words & open up & hash out some shit from their past
It's just so solid & well paced
I'm glad the case isn't like tangentially related to their relationship woes, that trope is so tired & messy

Successfully killing Lilith and keeping Dean out of Hell has the brothers ready for a good, old-fashioned, hunter-on-demon brawl. It's time to get back to the basics, back to the way things used to be, when monsters got ganked and that was the end of things. That said, they are not ready for a new kind of creature to appear in the middle of their fight, covered in blood and begging for mercy they aren't supposed to give.
Meanwhile, Castiel is panicking. He's been tortured senseless for four decades straight, and now he's been thrown down in front of two hunters. If he thought his brothers were bad... well, all angels knew how cruel hunters were... and Castiel has no idea how to convince them he doesn't need to be, in the shorter one's words, ganked.

Summary
Dean's life is finally changing. After years of enduring Alastair's abuse, the alpha dies and Dean's married off to the next alpha the system pairs him with - Castiel. The man is strange and distant, but not exactly bad, and Dean's determined to be on his best behavior and not mess up the chance he was given. Soon enough, though, he fucks up anyway and has to call the alpha for help.
Castiel's lived his entire life without an omega by his side, and he was fine with that. He doesn't know how to proceed once he's suddenly married to a beautiful man who's obviously been through a lot. Omegas were always a confusing subject to him, so he tries not to interfere much - neither of them is there by their choice. But when Dean calls for help, he understands he's going to have to set some things straight and engage more.

Sweet, life-affirming Destiel
listen, i don't even like a/b/o but I'm WEAK for any story about trauma recovery & consent so this drew me in against my will with a tractor beam
Also, pretty sure I can only tolerate a/b/o when it goes full distopian nightmare like this
Omegas are slaves without human rights in this
Dean re-learns how to be his own person after decades of cruel "conditioning"
Castiel learns he's not a monster and is able to connect with & care for Dean despite their pasts
I was also really invested in what was going on with their families

There's a few times where a good solution to a certain problem in the story is presented, but they never take that route specifically because Dean states he's uncomfortable with it, so they find another way -- we love to see it -

Until, of course, life turns his clear lake back into choppy waters when he and Lisa call it quits for good and he ends up at Cas’ door at two in the morning, ready to honor the agreement they made when they were too drunk in college. A rebound weekend, hook up with each other after a breakup to numb the pain of loss. An easy, surefire way to not catch feelings. Sounds perfect, until Dean catches the very feelings he’s been avoiding for who knows how long. Which is a problem, because he’s straight, and Cas is just a little too out of his league.
